I recently shattered the bottom half of my shin when my dog, Archie, and i were struck by a vehicle that was doing 50 mph. These pictures are of my injuries and the bike trailer that was connected to my bicycle when we were hit. As you can see, the rear wheel of my bicycle was torn from my bike frame upon impact. MY DOG WAS IN THAT. The driver fled the scene when i asked them to call 911 because my leg was L shaped. My phone was too far away from me to get to it, i could see it lit up in the road about 20 ft away from me. It was about 4:45 am so there wasnt another car anywhere in sight. I saw archie poke his head out of the tall grass beside the road and i was immediately relieved. I tried to get him to come to me but he wouldnt. He was scared. I saw another pair of headlights coming around the curve towards me so i started flailing my arms and yelling for help. They turned on there turning signal and went around me. Then another car came around the curve a second or two later. So i flailed and yelled one more time, thank god they stopped. A man got out of the car and asked me why i was laying in the road and i told him i was hit by a car and that i needed an ambulance. But before he could get his phone out i noticed Archie wasn't any where that i could see him and i ask the man if he could see my dog any where and he said no. I asked the man to help me yell for him and look for him. Then the man said what do you want me to do look for a dog or call 911. I told him i dont know, i wanted to say find archie but i knew that would be rediculous because my leg was definitely broken and L shaped. Then i told the man that he's the best dog ive ever had and that i really loved him and i just wanted to make sure he was ok. While I was saying that he noticed my leg and said omg im calling 911. By this time several cars had lined up behind the mans car. Archie was no where to be seen. The man was on the phone with 911. He was asking me questions that they were asking him but i didnt answer because i knew that when the ambulance got there they would be leaving Archie behind if he was still hiding. So i kept yelling archies name over and over, but there was no sign of him before they arrived. The EMTs were asking me questions and after every answer i gave them i was asking them to please find my dog before we left. They were ignoring that request entirely. They put me on the stretcher and started putting me in the ambulance. By this time i was getting hysterically pleading with them not to leave him on the side of the road. Which they ignored. Someone handed me my phone. So immediately i called everyone i knew that had a car to ask them to go find Archie. I was only able to get one person to agree to go look for him. I reluctantly called my mother last, i called her several times before she answered, when she did i told her what happened, and that just my leg was broken and pleaded with her not to come to the hospital but to please go find Archie first. She immediately started screaming at me. Thats the last thing i needed so i hung up the phone. The ambulance was arriving at the hospital anyway. And the nurses and doctor were asking me a million questions and i just kept asking them to find my dog. The last thing i remember before i woke up from surgery being surrounded by medical personnel and the doctor ordering ketamine and Fentanyl while I just kept asking them all to help me find my dog. When I woke up I was in a hospital room and my mother was there, the first thing I said was "did you find archie?" She said no. I immediately started crying. I felt so much fear that something had happened to him. I was so worried. All the possibilities of what could have happened to him started flooding my mind, internal injuries, getting hit by another car, getting into fights with other dogs, someone taking him. I didnt know if he was alive and the thought of something bad happening to him and him dying scared and alone was worse than breaking my leg. And i can say that cause that because thats exactly how i felt in that moment. I was so mad that i wasnt able to search for him non stop until i found him. I was mad at my mom for even being at the hospital instead of out looking for him. I started to sob and voiced my fears to my mom. So she left and went to look for him again on her way home. She called me hours later to tell me she didnt find him. I cried myself to sleep that night. If it werent for the pain medication i dont think i would have slept at all. I woke up early the next morning and the nurses told me id be discharged that day with the external fixator that was put on during surgery. So i had this contraption on my leg holding my bones together. I called my mom and told her that they were discharging me and that when they did, i wanted to try and find archie on my way to her house. So when I finally left the hospital i had to sit in the back seat of my moms car to keep me from banging my leg and its cantraption into things. When we got to the area that it all happened i sat up and started scanning the area for him. We went down several roads in the area and if i saw a person outside id stop and ask them if theyd seen him. No one saw him. It was almost dark by the time we got to my moms house. I didnt want to stop looking until we found him but mom was tired. But arriving at my moms without archie felt like defeat. My hope was dwindling. I couldnt sleep though so i stayed up posting lost dog ads on every facebook page i could find. 2 days later a woman said she thought she saw a dog that looked like archie in her neighborhood, which was 2 miles from where we were hit. Then i was hopeful again! So i got my walker and went and told my mom and then we went to where the woman had said she'd seen him, we talked to the woman and she said he seemed drowsy and just kind of out of it and that he wouldnt come to her or take food or water from her. And then i started thinking it wasnt him because hes very friendly and loves attention and him not coming to her was unlikely. But that was the day before, she hadn't seen my ad until after the dog was gone. So we drove around the neighborhood and again asked every person we saw about him. Two other people reported seeing a dog that looked like him and they also said that he wouldnt take food or water and wouldnt come to them. The last woman that we talked to asked if he was wearing a collar and i told her yes and what it looked like and she confirmed that the dog she saw was wearing the same collar. SO HE WAS ALIVE!!! We continued looking in that neighborhood and the one beside it until dark. We didnt find him and once again the worry was starting to set in. Him not taking food or water from anyone really had me worried about internal injuries. When i got back to my moms that evening i updated my ads to let people know that he was seen alive but he was still missing so maybe people would still know to look for him. I didnt here anything again for 4 more days. I had been out that day looking for him and putting up lost dog posters near that neighborhood he was seen in and near where we were hit. was almost back to my moms and it was well passed dark when two different people sent me a screenshot of a "found dog" ad and the dog in the ad was eating what looked like trash but i couldnt tell because the picture was taken far away from him. BUT IT WAS DEFINITELY ARCHIE. HE WAS ALIVE and TWELVE MILES away from where we were hit. IN THE DIRECTION OF SEVIERVILL (where we are from). So we turned the car around and went to the neighborhood where the picture was taken, I rolled my window down and started yelling his name and he came running out of a yard towards the car that I was in. I opened the door and he tried to climb in but he couldn't because he was weak and exhausted. I leaned down and scooped him into the car with me the best I could with the contraption thing on my leg. He climbed into my lap and put his little snout against my ear and starting whimpering and I wrapped my arms around him and told him I missed him SO MUCH too and im SO glad he's okay. My poor little guy looked 10 years older. And he'd lost so much weight. He was headed back to sevierville. I love him. Im so happy that I dont have to try and heal with the weight of losing him or not knowing what happened to him on my shoulders. I dont know if I could have. I definitely didnt want to heal until I found him. But now that he's home and ive had the external fixator removed from my leg and had another surgery (hopefully my last), the financial burdens from this injury are really starting to sink in. I cant put any weight whatsoever on this leg for three months. Which means i cant work or make any money for three months. My phone is going to be shut off any time now because its passed due. I was already homeless so its not like I have rent to pay. I can't buy food and spend a lot of time hungry. I can't buy dog food but so far I've been fortunate enough to have friends buy if for me. I was living with my mom but she basically told me that I was a burden to her since my leg is broken and I can't help her with anything. So I left there and came to stay with a friend but now I can only stay here until August 31st. I have no idea where im gonna go or what im gonna do because I have no money at all and I can't work for two more months. This is the first time in my life that I've ever NEEDED help from anyone. Asking for help is not something I am comfortable with at all. So this was really hard for me. I almost didnt do it. So please everyone dont think of me as a bum, yes I was homeless before but I didnt ask for anything from anyone and I kept archie and I fed, clean, and happy. Even warm in the winter! Being homeless with a dog and a broken leg is going to be impossible. I really need help with a temporary place to live until I can work again. I can't do that until I walk. So please if there is anybody that can afford to help me even if its just a few bucks it all adds up. Every dollar helps in a major way and every cent is greatly appreciated more than you know. And if you can't help with any money thats okay too, if you just share this on your social media that also helps a great deal also. And if you are still reading this, THANK YOU. SO MUCH.
