AMTC - Actors, Models and Talent for Christ - is a Christian non-profit organization that has trained and is still training up followers of Christ to go into the entertainment industry to be bright lights shining in the darkness. Through AMTC I was given a fantastic opportunity to showcase my talent as a singer-songwriter, as well as an actor and model, for a huge number of well-known studios, music managers, casting directors and other entertainment-industry leaders at a week-long "SHINE" conference in Orlando, FL! Here is my update about some of the things that happened with me there from June 29th-July 5th:
Note: Hi, this is lengthy. Ready, go!
SHINE Conference experience—
Wow, I just got back from a week-long conference called SHINE, through AMTC – Actors, Models, and Talent for Christ– in Orlando, Florida. We were required to stay at the Gaylord Palms resort, because that's where the convention was held, which was a amazingly beautiful yet very expensive place...lol. I met a lot of people, made great relationships, and gained a lot of personal motive; I am now Setting Fires!
So, i'll start with what transformed me the most during this trip: I've been reading this book called Switch On Your Brain by Dr. Caroline Leaf, and man, this book is transformative! I read some on the plane ride to Orlando last week, and I'm so glad I did because one part I read seriously helped me all week. It was about how, subconsciously, our memories have an emotion attached to them, and when they are brought up into the conscious mind, those emotions actually become feelings. That's why when you think of something specific that you had a very good or bad experience with, automatically those feelings about that come up—but you can choose whether to approve of those feelings being there or not. This helped me immensely this week because every time I would be standing in line before a performance in a showcase and feelings of fear or anxiety or nervousness would come up, immediately I would think about what she said and tell myself, "I don't have to accept these feelings. I choose not to feel nervous or fearful, and I choose to receive joy and peace from the Lord!" And it worked! After the first showcase I wasn't nervous for any of my performances. As I kept repeating that to myself anytime I felt nervous or fearful, it would not take root and it would immediately subside and I found myself just being joyful and peaceful all week. So phenomenal! I can't tell you how much better that was than standing in line being nervous and fearing my performance for 30 minutes or an hour.
It was such an amazing experience all week! Not just the aspect of being around a lot of creative and excited people, which was awesome, but getting to see the fruit of my, and others', obedience in the little things; like choosing to actually go do AMTC in the first place. I got to draw people out of their shells and encourage them in having fun with who they are. I loved it :) And also in stepping out of my comfort zone straight into my fear: Out of a very small act of obedience on my part – choosing to bring my guitar to the 6:30am pool baptisms on Saturday – I got to end up leading a whole lot of people in worship in the middle of the Gaylord Palms Resort (because I was the only one who brought a guitar, and I almost didn't 'cause I thought other people would have theirs and I didn't think I'd help much)! There were only about six or eight people who signed up to be baptized originally, but there ended up being about 60 people that got baptized over the span of about an hour and a half, during which I was playing the entire time. God keeps giving me tastes of my calling to show me that it is really what I want to do.
I got a few callbacks from music companies wanting to talk to me more and follow up, so I got to get a feel for their vibe (sounds creepy lol). Interesting to get to talk personally with really big names in the industry, not that I knew them before this conference though. All of them I talked to were like, "Oh yeah, 18 Strings! Y'all did great!" (18 Strings was the band name we came up with for our collaboration showcase in which two other people and I wrote a song in two days to perform. We were the group in that showcase chosen to perform during the talent finale too!). So the guy in it, Angel, was 17 from New York, I'm 28 from Austin, and the other woman, Chantal, was 59 from Los Angeles! How much more different can you get!? Lol they were both so awesome to work with though—we had all prayed for whoever God was going to put us with for that showcase beforehand. We prayed together several times throughout the week too; they're both awesome lovers of the Lord! Angel actually helps lead worship at his church and Chantal has performed a lot in the past.
While sitting in the airport, waiting for my flight home, I just sat there for 30 minutes playing and singing worship all by my lonesome, though there were people all around, and to have the spiritual freedom to do that.... Even if for that alone, this has been worth it!
