Avec le Fonds Joséphine Bacon, nous voulons, chaque année, donner la chance à des jeunes Innus d'aller fouler le Nutshimit, le territoire et ses lieux d'importance pour les Innus depuis des millénaires. À la manière de Joséphine Bacon, l'objectif est transmettre la langue et la culture innue afin que les jeunes puissent, à leur tour, vivre la toundra imprégnée des ancêtres qui y ont habité.
Pour la deuxième année, le Fonds Joséphine Bacon offrira un voyage initiatique de plusieurs jours sur le territoire, entièrement pris en charge, à quelques jeunes qui auront été sélectionnés selon leur motivation par un jury de personnalités et d'artistes innus.
Origine du projet
Je m’appelle humain le long-métrage documentaire de Kim O’Bomsawin, a été récompensé dans tous les festivals où il a été présenté, dont deux prix du public au CinéFest Sudbury et au CIFF. Il a également reçu le titre du Meilleur documentaire canadien au Festival international du film de Vancouver (VIFF), au Festival international du film de Calgary (CIFF), ainsi que quatre Prix Gémeaux. Suite à ces annonces prestigieuses, qui sont assorties de prix en argent (20 000$ au total), la cinéaste Kim O’Bomsawin et l’équipe de production Terre Innue et Productions Innu Assi ont décidé de créer le Fonds Joséphine Bacon pour la valorisation de la langue (innu-aimun) et du savoir-faire traditionnel (innu- aitun).
Si les prix obtenus en festivals ont permis de lancer l'initiative, ils ne suffiront pas à la rendre pérenne. C'est pourquoi nous sollicitons votre aide. Tous seront appelés à participer au projet avec leurs moyens, quels qu’ils soient, afin de porter ensemble le rêve de Joséphine Bacon.

Symboliquement, ces récompenses représentent l’aboutissement d’un magnifique voyage aux côtés de Joséphine, mais surtout une consécration pour cette femme devenue icône. La création d’une bourse pour la jeunesse Innue vient donner du sens à l’ensemble du travail que nous avons accompli ensemble, mais surtout concrétise le rêve de Joséphine: la transmission de la langue et du savoir-faire de ces ancêtres à la jeunesse de son Peuple. »

C’est cette langue de nomade que Joséphine a eu le privilège de côtoyer pendant toute sa vie. Joséphine nous partage généreusement cette richesse qui trouve sa source dans l’immense territoire innu. Un fonds portant son nom, qui permettra aux jeunes de vivre [territoire], représente sans l’ombre d’un doute, la façon la plus respectueuse de redonner au territoire et ses gardiens, ce qu’ils lui ont enseignée.»

Description of the project
With the Joséphine Bacon Fund, we want to give young Innu the chance, each year, to go and walk the Nutshimit, the territory and the places that have been important to the Innu for thousands of years. In the manner of Joséphine Bacon, the objective is to transmit the Innu language and culture so that the young people can experience the tundra, which is imbued with the ancestors who lived there.
For the second year, the Josephine Bacon Fund will offer an initiatory trip of several days on the territory, free of charge, to a few young Innus who will have been selected according to their motivation by a jury of Innu personalities and artists.
Origin of the project
Call Me Human , the feature length documentary by Kim O’Bomsawin has been honoured in every festival where it has been shown, including two audience awards at CinéFest Sudbury and CIFF. The film also received the Best Canadian Documentary awards at the Vancouver International Film Festival (VIFF) and Calgary International Film Festival (CIFF), as well as four Gémeaux awards. Following these prestigious announcements, which also come with cash prizes (amounting to a total of $20,000), filmmaker Kim O’Bomsawin and the production team at Terre Innue and Production Innu Assi have decided to create the Joséphine Bacon Fund for the revival and appreciation of the language (innu-aimun) and traditional know-how (innu-aitun).
The prizes won at festivals by the documentary Call Me Human from filmmaker Kim O’Bomsawin helped to launch the initiative, but they are not enough to make the fund last. This is why we are asking for help. Everyone will be called to participate in this project, according to their means - big or small - in order to realize the dream of Joséphine Bacon.

Symbolically, these prizes represent the culmination of an amazing journey alongside Joséphine, but most of all, a consecration for this woman who became an icon. The creation of a grant for the Innu youth gives meaning to all the work we have done together, while making Joséphine’s dream a reality: passing on the language and know-how of her ancestors to the younger generation.”
