Gray's Top Surgery Fund

Donation protected

Heya, my name is Gray Folie (they/them pronouns), also sometimes known as Dupe. I’m a full-time writer and artist of comics, particularly about mental illness and being LGBT+. You might know me from my first comic, Drop-Out , and I’m currently working on one called Fresh Meat

I’m making this GoFundMe because, while art and writing are my passions, and the only career I’m capable of maintaining with my disabilities, it does not provide health insurance and supporting both myself and my wife who is unable to work leaves me unable to accumulate any savings.

I came out as transgender when I was 18 years old, which was 8 years ago. I was later kicked out of my home, leaving me in the position of housing and financial instability that I still struggle with today.
As you probably know, medical transition is prohibitively expensive for low-income trans people. I started HRT at the age of 21 with the approval of a licensed gender therapist who deemed transition medically necessary, and later stopped due to a combination of these financial and medical complications.
Recently (July 2020) I was finally able to financially afford my legal name change thanks to the stimulus check I received -- dealing with my birth name was another large deterrent for reengaging with transition, and I'd like to continue pursuing medical transition now that it's out of the way, as dysphoria has a very large impact on my mental and physical health.
At this point in time, I'm back on testosterone, and in the process of figuring out how to pursue the necessary therapy to gain approval for surgery in my area.
I am going to have to pay for EVERYTHING out of pocket, and that means everything; not just the procedure itself, but consultation fees, transportation to and from pre- and post-op appointments, and the years of prerequisite therapy required to be approved for surgery in the first place. This fund is to help with those costs.
Due to the long-term nature of the transition process, this fundraiser is not urgent and may take years to come to fruition even if it reaches its goal quickly. No need to feel rushed.

If you are confused or would like to know more about WPATH standards of care for transgender individuals, you can read a summary here, written by a surgeon who performs this surgery, or read the actual standards of care as a free PDF here.
While WPATH recommendations are changing, surgeons are not required to follow or update their requirements, and the requirements necessary for trans individuals with documented mental health issues like myself can be much stricter. This is why I have included therapy in the cost of the procedure.
You may also look into the costs of top surgery here or here as well as searching around various surgeons' websites.

Your donations will change my life immeasurably and you have my deepest gratitudes.
Any excess funding, such as if I am taken on by a surgeon who does not require psychiatric clearance, will be donated to other trans surgery funds on GoFundMe. Thanks for reading! :)
