A Helping Hand for Erika Hill

Donation protected
Imagine that you go to sleep one night as the sum of many things ... a mother ... a girlfriend ... a college student ... a nationally recognized intercollegiate debater.

Then imagine that you wake up to pounding on the door, a room full of smoke, and your home in flames.  Imagine all the photos of your children's early years ... gone.  Your awards and honors from debate ... gone.  Your clothes, your furnishings, your college textbooks, your computer,  your eyeglasses, your everything ... in ashes.

But not your life.  That remains.

On October 10, 2014 at just after midnight, Erika Hill found that the careless actions of a neighbor led to her home burning so completely that nothing could be rescued.  All the things that were part of her everyday life, things she probably took for granted, are gone.  She's got a pair of sweats, a t-shirt, and a cellphone.  And even more importantly, she has family ... her parents, her siblings, her boyfriend, and even her extended IPDA Debate family.

Everyone who knows Erika knows that she's maternal in the extreme ... she's not happy unless she's helping people.  How many times has she given guidance or counsel to people?  How many times has she mentored young debaters?  How many times has she sacrificed for those she cares about?

Well now is a chance to give back.  Now there is a chance to help her start over.

If you are a friend to her, or know her Bossier Parish Community College classmates or BPCC Debate teammates, or perhaps you're a friend to the LSUS Debate Team or Lee College Debate Team and know the regard we have for her, or perhaps are simply wants to pay something forward ... you can help.

I'm asking you for $1.00 or $5.00 or whatever you can spare.  I truly believe that it is the sum of our good will, not the singular act, that will help give Erika back some peace of mind and allow her to refocus on family and school and debate.

What will this go towards?  Some clothes.  An inexpensive computer so she can keep up with her studies.  A bed to sleep on.  Nothing fancy, just enough to get back on track.  If you can't donate, perhaps you have some giftcards that are collecting dust in a drawer ... or you know someone who represents Avon or Mary Kay that can get her some basic cosmetics ... or someone with a used laptop who is willing to sell it on the cheap ... no matter what you can give, I hope you will give.

If you want more information about Erika, don't hesitate to reach out to Bob Alexander, BPCC Debate Head Coach or Joe Ganakos, Lee College Debate Head Coach; we consider this young woman more than a student or even protege ... we consider her "family".  Bob and Joe can be reached at:
