My son Evan was diagnosed with severe schizophrenia at age 17. He was a straight A student, played sports, surfed, skated, all the things a boy loves to do. Evan's mental condition continues to decline as he is not capable of taking care of his own needs, he has fallen between the cracks in the Mental Health System.
The crisis centers refuse to help him as he is not able to make the call on own his behalf and as his mother I cannot call for him since he is an adult, they say "come back when you are more stable". The hospital's release him after a few hours. The saddest thing is he remembers what life was like before he got sick. He wants so badly to have a girl friend, a job, friends. Evan is tortured every second of the day, what he see's, hear's and feel's is real. He is in so much pain.
As his mom it kills me that I cannot take care of all his needs. I am asking for funds to hire a mental health worker, a mentor, someone that can assist Evan with connecting the dots. He is also in need of a Board and Care which is approximately $1,200 a month.
