Not Humerus: Flynn’s Ruff Day Surgery Fund
Today, I got ready for the UofL/UK game, dressing Flynny in his cardinal hoodie. My sister Megan texted me and asked if she could take Flynn to Cherokee Park, something she loves doing when she’s in town, and I of course said, “yes!” She came over and I made her take tons of pics of Flynn and I in our matching cardinal gear (obviously).

Then I headed out to watch the game at Z Bar with my friend and Flynn and Megan headed to the park. During the first half of the game, I get a call from Megan, which is bizarre because she never calls. I couldn’t hear her due to all the fans, but I could tell something was wrong by the tone in her voice. When I got outside, she told me that Flynn had been hit by a car.

If you know me, you probably know how obsessed I am with Flynn. He is the highlight of my day pretty much every day. He greets me at the door when I get home, cuddles with me every night, and entertains me all day long. I’m sure people get annoyed with how much I talk and post about him, but he is my little baby. So, when I heard my sister tell me he had been hit by a car, it’s safe to assume I started crying at Z Bar, right during the middle of the UK/UofL game.

All Megan knew so far was that he probably had a broken leg but was waiting for x-rays. The vet just wanted her to call me first to let me know what had happened. I had so many questions. “What’s the address for the hospital?” “How was he acting?” “What the person in the car do? “Did you see the car hit him?” “Was he bleeding?” “Did the vet like his hoodie?” and on and on.
(Megan with Flynn, the "reindeer" last year: my favorite picture of them)
Megan told me that the car was speeding through Cherokee park and that the driver didn’t even stop. She went to hold Flynn after he was hit and just yelled at the car as it sped up even faster and left, not getting any information on it or the driver. A biker in the park came to help and she got him in the car and rushed him to the hospital.
(Flynn's, "Mom, why are you so obsessed with me, I'm just trying to sleep" face)
Skipping over leaving the game early, rushing to the hospital, more crying, and talking with the vet: I found out Flynn has a long oblique fracture of his left humerus. I am so thankful that this is the only big injury. However, they estimate Flynn’s surgery to cost between $3,500-$4,500 in order to pin his bone back together. The cheaper option is to amputate his leg for about $2,000. Due to the fracture being on the upper part of his leg, it cannot be stabilized and fixed by just a cast.

I wish I had the money to fix Flynn’s leg because I would pay for his surgery in a heartbeat. I, however, am in grad school and currently an occupational therapy student practitioner. I just finished my first round of clinicals yesterday working with traumatic brain injury clients for the past three months. When I started this rotation, I had to essentially quit my job (only working some weekends) and do not have funds to cover this expensive of a surgery.

I could not afford to keep Flynn at the hospital until there was a surgeon available, as recommended by the vet, because there won’t be one until Wednesday due to the holidays. It is $300/day so would be $1,500 alone just for him to wait there for surgery. At the other emergency hospital, I was able to make a consult for Monday at 9am and am crossing my fingers Flynn will be able to have the surgery Monday afternoon. I have taken him home until then and am asking for any size donation, big or small or even just a share to spread the word to reach my goal of $4,500, so that I do not have to amputate Flynn’s leg or worse. I most likely will have to put 75% down on Monday for the surgery and then pay the rest after. I am so grateful for anyone willing to help Flynn and I start the New Year off on the right (and left) foot.
(Flynn at the hospital today- laying with Megan but staring at me the whole time, smiling because of the pain meds.)
Thanks for all the kindness, prayers, and positive vibes. I'll keep you all updated on the surgery and how Flynn is doing every day!

**First Night Update: I set up a room for Flynn with nothing that he could jump on (not that I think he would try) but I made sure the chairs were turned backward and blocked. I didn't want to have to carry him up and down the stairs to my room, so I blew up an air mattress on the floor so I could sleep next to him and brought his bed, hedgehog toy, crate, food and water all in the room. He has to be in his crate whenever I am not there and it is very important he does not jump on anything which is a big trait of his breed. Flynn has to take pain pills every 8 hours so I made made sure to set my phone alarm for 7pm, 3am, and 11am because that's his pill schedule based on when they gave him the initial meds at the hospital. Flynn cried all through the first half of the night from the pain which was heartbreaking. I would wake up what seemed like every 5 minutes to pet him and calm him down. He took the his first three pills fine at 7pm, which was shocking because he hates pills. I think he was still very spaced out though and that the hospital meds had not fully worn off yet. It's now 4am as I type this so I just gave him three more pills an hour ago. He actually woke me up at 2:50am with two loud thuds from him trying to stand up and falling. He is slightly more himself as he spit out the bigger capsule pill and one of the smaller ones too when I tried to administer them (what he always does with his medicine.) He also finally ate some food (he wasn't even eating white cheddar cheezits when we first got home which are his fav and a rare treat) and chugged water like crazy. I carried him outside to go to the bathroom for a second time but he still would not stand up to go. I'm hoping he goes in the morning with all the water he just drank. Carrying him makes me so nervous, I'm afraid I'm going to hurt his arm, hit it on something, or set him down wrong. Flynn's also getting terrible gas randomly, I'm assuming from all the meds, so I hope his stomach isn't too upset. He finally gave me some kisses on my hand and stopped drooling (I think a side effect from the hospital meds but he also was bleeding in his mouth) and panting/shivering (def side effect from the hospital meds). I am keeping him at home all day Sunday (technically today) and Megan and my Mom are going to visit to stay with him too to give me some breaks. The neighborhood dogs were barking earlier and he tried to bark back but couldn't and just whimpered. I'm still crossing my fingers for Monday surgery. They say with this type of break it just has to be done within the week so that it does not start to heal incorrectly. The vet really spooked me when I took Flynn home though, freaking me out about his bone going through his skin if I'm not careful and telling me his bladder could leak if I didn't get more tests done. So those thoughts have me very paranoid and stressed as I try to sleep. Keep sending all the good vibes Flynn's way and I'll keep keeping you all updated.

PS: Louisville people, if you have any orthopedic vet surgeons you would recommend let me know! I am going to call more as soon as they open Monday morning because right now I've only talked to the two 24 hour ones that were open this weekend!

*UPDATE: Thanks in LARGE part to an amazing anonymous donor, Flynn's surgery is covered! I cannot believe it and am SO grateful for everyone's support.
ANY ADDITIONAL DONATIONS WILL BE GIVEN TO THE ARROW FUND (https://thearrowfund.org), which helps to rehabilitate the animal victims of torture and abuse.
THANK YOU ALL for your generosity. Flynn and I love you all.*
I will continue to give updates on his progress before, during, and after surgery!! (Also, I've realized there is an actual update section so check there for future ones. -Kaley)
