When I was in middle school, I was teased about my appearance, as I’m sure most of us were. All of the love from my family couldn’t shield me from the outside world. Eventually, I grew to love myself and stand as the confident woman I am today. I began to see that nothing anyone else said could define me, but out of that experience grew a passion to help other young women and girls see the beauty in themselves.
After graduating with my BFA from the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) in New York City, I moved back to Kansas City, Kansas (my hometown) for some time. Years later, I returned to New York to “pursue my dream” of starting a clothing line and again I was met with more criticism, but this time it was about my abilities and the limitations other people put on me. This experience further fueled my passion to now not only show women and girls their unique beauty but to show them that they could achieve any dream they set their mind to! I am living proof.
It began with my love of sketching. I always pick female subjects that I feel have a very unique beauty. I started putting those drawings on T-shirts with what money I could and I received such a positive response that I just decided to go for it and start my “Fly by Knight” line. The F.L.Y. is an acronym for “First Love Yourself” but I also want women to look FLY in my apparel line and soar in the direction of their dreams. The website not only features apparel and art but real life interviews with other women and girls from around the country describing what makes them fly in an attempt to inspire and uplift anyone that sees them.
The money you donate would pay for the following: supplies (T-shirts, tote bags, buttons, other apparel related items), printing costs (screen burning, color changes, digital printing etc.), New York launch party, website maintenance, and marketing materials.
