I am just a 17 year old student living in the not so big city of Wodonga, but I dream of one day helping change the world for the better. I feel honoured to say that I am one of the 30 students from all over Australia to be selected to attend the 61st London Youth International Science Forum in July-August 2019 for the 2-week program. As a person who has always been interested in science and its real-life applications, I believe LIYSF will be an amazing opportunity for me to hone my understanding of STEM and the skills associated with it.
LIYSF held its first residential conference in 1959 and has been held every year ever since. It involves staying on campus at the Imperial College in London and day visits to the finest research centres, like Oxford and Cambridge Universities. At LIYSF I would also be able to attend lectures and demonstrations by world-renowned scientists from all over the world. LIYSF would give me the opportunity to meet people from all over the world with the same interests as me and the desire to delve deeper into the world of science.
I have taken part in various maths and science competitions and Olympiads since I was a child. I was also privileged enough to attend the National Youth Science Forum year 12 Program at the Australian National University in January this year. NYSF broadened my knowledge of science and further encouraged me to pursue my passion of physics and mathematics. NYSF played a crucial role in me realizing my love for STEM and also its practicality in helping solve the world’s problems. I believe the international program would be even more beneficial for me.
I am sure that I will make the most of my time in London, using the knowledge I would gain in real life, making contacts with people who could help me further my future. I believe that this experience would be invaluable to me and greatly help broaden my horizons in the near future. I one day want to make changes in the maths and science field and truly achieve something great, I believe this would help me.
The cost of the program includes the airfare to the forum and back, the accommodation costs, food, program fee, and medical/travel insurance.
