My good friends brought their 4 year old son to his first ever Dolphins game yesterday. On the way home he told them, "When the blue team won, I said F#$& man..." After reminding her son that he shouldn't use that word, my friend responded, "I'm gonna tell you what my dad told me. I'm raising you to be a Dolphin fan so you can learn to be tough in this world and keep getting back up after disappointments."
It's a touching, if bleak, sentiment that I've mentally bookmarked to share with my son once he's old enough. And sadly it appears to be the only lesson learned after another pitiful display of crushing mediocrity.
After last season ended on a down note, Dolphins owner Stephen Ross said, "We will take a hard look at where we have fallen short and make the necessary changes to deliver our ultimate goal of building and sustaining a winning team that competes for championships.” And yet here we are again.
Tua, in typical fashion, maintained a meaningless high completion percentage while throwing 2 interceptions (one called back b/c of a penalty) and collapsing like me at my brother's wedding after 4 captain and cokes. The only deep pass he completed all day was badly under thrown and bailed out by Tyreek Hill.
The defense gave up 33 points to a Patriots offense that hasn't scored more than 30 points in 3 years.
The special teams unit gave up a backbreaking touchdown return just when the team finally had a chance to get back in the game.
Meanwhile, Chris Grier, who isn't as worried about the offensive line as we are, is still employed. Yet another season has been sabotaged by his willful refusal to fix the offensive line, and his insistence on loading up this roster with injured players, has-beens, and day workers from the Home Depot parking lot.
To quote Dan Lebatard, "“It’s not that they lost. It’s not. It’s the most catastrophic ways to lose. We haven’t even gotten to the point where Tua misses four games. We haven’t even gotten to the point where the skill guys get hurt. The season is over after two games and I don’t think I’ve ever said that in my years covering the Dolphins. Not even in the 0-15 season. I don’t think I’ve ever said, oh no this is so calamitous. They’ve got so many problems of the kind that you can’t get over.”
So here we are, another season of failure, and another season of owner Stephen Ross not holding the front office, the coaching staff, or his players accountable.
Mr Ross, you said you would make any moves necessary to build a winning team that competes for championships. So put your money where your mouth is. Fire Chris Grier and fire Coach McDaniel.
And if you're too afraid of the Brain Flores lawsuit to hold Chris Grier accountable, then do us all a favor and sell the team to someone who will.
THANK YOU FOR YOUR ATTENTION TO THIS MATTER
