Dear friends, family, and colleagues,
In early 2017, I received some difficult news. I was diagnosed with ovarian cancer and had my first surgery in February of that year. In April of this year, cancer re-occurred and I had my second surgery to remove tumors on June 19, 2019. Unfortunately, not all the tumors could be removed during this second surgery. Fortunately, I have a rare, unusually slow-growing cancer and, therefore, a good window for additional treatments still exists.
My insurance will cover some of my needed health care. However, a very promising treatment protocol for cancer and additional “complementary” interventions are not covered by insurance and are quite costly. Since I will be scaling back my professional work to prioritize self-care and to maximize my wellness efforts, I know that additional funds would help me to fully access these recommended treatments.
I know that part of self-care is recognizing when you need help and being willing to accept it when offered. I am reaching out to friends, family, colleagues, and others who may wish to support me in my wellness endeavors over the next year. All donations will go towards the out-of-pocket costs for recommended medical supplies, medical treatments, and medical appointments.
If you wish to help me meet my challenge with a monetary contribution in any amount, I would be extremely grateful. I also thank you for energizing my well-being with your positive thoughts and prayers for my recovery. I especially thank those who have already included me in their prayer circles.
Today, I am still feeling physically well and energetic. However, I understand that my condition will worsen if I take no action. I am truly fortunate to have low-grade cancer and a generous window of time to address it. I am fortunate to have access to an outstanding team of doctors who are closely monitoring me. I am grateful for all the loving support of friends and family members, and especially for my daughter's devotion and generous help.
I believe that I am resilient and optimistic by nature. Past hardships have certainly helped me grow both emotionally and spiritually. I believe this experience can also offer me rewards if I summon the courage and discipline to use it well.
Warmly,
Flora Dunbar
