Help needed for flooding in Ahr Valley (Germany)
Hello, this is Kai Kessenbrock (https://www.linkedin.com/in/kai-kessenbrock-26919065), Michael Mahler(https://www.linkedin.com/in/michael-mahler-05298878/) and Christian Meyer (https://www.linkedin.com/in/christian-albert-meyer-25081b/). We are fundraising to support the people of the region around the river Ahr in Germany, which was devastated by an unprecedented flash flood on July 15, 2021. Our hearts are broken by the stories and images shared by our friends and family in the region. Many people have lost their lives in the raging floods that struck the region in the middle of the night, and even more people are still missing in the debris and chaos that this terrible disaster left behind (see images and news articles appended below). Countless families have lost their homes, cars and businesses and are homeless. Despite tremendous support from other regions in Germany, private and government-initiated funds, uncertainty and support gaps persist. This is mostly driven by insurance clauses that exclude natural disasters such as the recent flood.
Before this disaster, the Ahr Valley was a picturesque wine making region famous for their exquisite pinot noir varietal called “Spaetburgunder” (https://winefolly.com/deep-dive/germanys-ahr-valley-mountains-of-pinot-noir/), and was a highly frequented tourist area famous for its thousand year old town centers such as Ahrweiler, and for the relaxing bath and spa regions of Bad Neuenahr (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bad_Neuenahr-Ahrweiler). As the pictures show below, our beloved area will never be the same. However, we hear encouraging stories of resilience and bravery from the local people who are starting rebuild the Ahr Valley and its infrastructure.
In order to ensure that the donated funds will reach the individuals, the proceedings will be contributed to the following local fundraiser, which help to rebuild the local infrastructure (water, electricity, internet) and support people and local businesses that were devastated by this disaster:
