The Yawanawá people are needing urgent help.
Several weeks ago it rained for a week straight in Acre, Brazil where they live. The Gregorio River quickly rose and water flooded most of the villages.
In total eight different Yawanawá communities (over a thousand people) have been negatively impacted by the floods. It was the worst flood they’ve experienced in generations.
Many families lost everything overnight. People are without clothes, toiletries, and food. Many homes and structures and food crops have been destroyed, and it’s a very challenging and sad time.
Typically they are able to transport supplies into the villages but because of the floods many of the boats and fuel that make this possible have been damaged or lost.
They are receiving absolutely no help from the Brazilian government and so are asking for assistance from this foundation.
We’re working with leaders Edi, Matsini, and Tashka to help bring new building supplies and survival necessities to the families of the Yawanawá people at this time. Some areas have been hit harder than others so the funds will be going to where it’s most needed.
At The SOFIE Foundation we are committed to giving every dollar donated directly to our Yawanawá friends, guardians of the Amazon rainforest.
All donations are tax deductible as the SOFIE Foundation is a 501(c)3 organization. If you would prefer to give to the Yawanawá Sociocultural Association directly, care of Tashka Yawanawá, please contact us for details.
It can be difficult to fathom the loss others endure when these extraordinary moments of climate disaster strike so far from our own experience. For those that have the capacity to give to these benevolent people in need, we thank you for your kind heart.
With respect,
Your friends at The SOFIE Foundation
PS - Sharing this page with your friends and community is another great way to help. Thanks so much!
