Phetsingkham Keonouchan is a dedicated lei maker in Wailua, and he and his partner have always worked hard to support themselves. When the Kona Low Storm hit, their lives were turned upside down. The floodwaters rose quickly, reaching waist-high levels and forcing them to evacuate to higher ground for safety. Phetsingkham’s wife was neck deep in water, and since she can’t swim, it was a terrifying experience for the whole family. They spent the night watching the rains take over the land, unsure of what would be left when they returned home.
Before evacuating, they moved their car to what they hoped would be safer, higher ground. Sadly, when they returned, they found the car had not survived the flood—it was completely submerged and totaled. The floors of their home were covered in mud, and their mattress soaked through. Even after drying it out as best they could, they’re still sleeping on it. Their generator, which was essential for powering appliances and electronics, was also destroyed. Now, three families are sharing a single generator that can barely keep the lights on, and without reliable power, even salvaging their refrigerator has been a struggle.
Phetsingkham relies on his car to get to town and sell the leis and flowers he makes for a living. Without it, and without a generator, daily life and work have become incredibly difficult. Your support will help them replace their car, purchase a new generator, and meet urgent needs as they recover from this disaster. This money will really help him and his partner get back on their feet. Any contribution, big or small, will make a meaningful difference in their journey to rebuild.
This GoFundMe was created by the volunteers from Help Maui Rise and will directly benefit Phetsingkham Keonouchan + Family.
