【Appeal for Emergency Relief for the Nepal Floods】
▼ What Happened in the Himalayas?!
On the morning of August 26, 2026, a massive glacier collapsed from a mountainside at an altitude of 5,000 meters in the Himalayan region, near the border between Nepal and the Tibet Autonomous Region.
Based on satellite imagery analysis, Professor Hidenori Watanabe of the University of Tokyo points out that a colossal glacier—approximately 1 kilometer wide, 2 kilometers long, and 1.2 kilometers high—collapsed.
The immense mass of ice and rock plunged 1,200 meters, rushing into the valley all at once.
This enormous energy concentrated in the narrow valley floor, triggering a magnitude 5.2 earthquake.
▼ A Torrential Surge Arrived in Just Over 20 Minutes
Shortly after the impact of the collapse, a tremendous torrent of massive water, ice, rock, and sediment surged down the valley, attacking the people.
The flood originating from the upper reaches is estimated to have reached the first settlement in just over 20 minutes.
Moreover, the water level in the Trishuli River rose by about 9 meters in a mere 30 minutes. This is equivalent to the height of a three-story building.
They heard a sound. They realized something was wrong. But there was not even time left to run.

In a single instant, their hometown had vanished.
▼ The Torrent Rushed Over 100 Kilometers, Destroying Infrastructure
Ice, rock, sediment, and water formed a gigantic torrent that raced down the Himalayan valley.
Roads, bridges, houses, shops, schools, banks, communication facilities, and hydroelectric plants—everything that supported the local community was rooted up and destroyed.
As of August 30, the death toll has exceeded675, and the safety of well over 3,000 people remains unconfirmed.
▼ The Current Situation of the Survivors
Right now, an estimated 93,000 households are in urgent need of relief.
People who have lost their homes are evacuating to higher ground and safe locations.
There is a shortage of daily necessities such as food, water, medicine, hygiene supplies, blankets, and tents.
The seasons are about to change in the Himalayan mountainous region. For those who have lost their homes, winter is not just a "cold season."
Thousands of children lack sufficient clothing and blankets. It is a matter of survival itself.

Who am I? Why should you trust this fundraiser?
My name is Paul Amstutz, and I live and work as a naturalist/guide in California's Yosemite National Park. I have been organizing & guiding rafting and trekking trips in Nepal since 1990, with 12 or 13 visits since then. I will return again in 2027, guiding trips for Wilderness Travel, as well as organizing 2 private treks for friends.
I've returned so many times, not just for the incredible scenery, food, and culture, but specifically for the amazing Nepali people. Our family of 5 lived in Kathmandu for half a year in 2010, volunteer teaching at a Tibetan charity school. We returned in 2015 after the earthquake, to personally visit villages where our fundraising efforts ($8,000+) were providing sheet metal to build temporary shelters. We have made life-long friends over the years, and feel a deep bond with Nepal.
Every penny donated will be sent, periodically, by me, to Usha & Goro's NGO, Ava Maya Nepal. This is all based on TRUST. After the 2015 earthquake, we encouraged friends to donate to big NGO's and relief organizations... but many were worried about the funds being diverted or redirected.
We spoke with personal friends in Nepal, who told us specific villages where homeless neighbors desperately needed shelter before the monsoon rains arrived. 12 sheets of metal, with some locally cut bamboo, would build a small rain-proof hut. MUCH better than a canvas tent. We personally sent thousands of dollars to Krishna, who wired it to his brother Shankar, who personally bought the steel and delivered it by truck to villagers in need. Very direct.... and very successful.
Usha and Goro will do similar direct aid, bringing whatever is most needed. For now it is food (rice & dal), medicine, and shelter (tents, blankets, sleeping mats.). As needs change over weeks and months, I fully trust them to adapt and provide appropriate supplies.

Usha hired a truck and brought a load of food and supplies to affected areas yesterday, Aug.28, and will continue to do so as long as donations keep coming in. Travel conditions are severe, so supplies are transferred to Nepal Police and Military, for further distribution.
This is yesterday... the first of, I'm sure, MANY trips into the flood zone!
