I am Julian Vigo, writer, anthropologist, journalist and filmmaker. I am also the mother of two wonderful children, 7 and 10 years of age.

On 16-17 May 2023, a major flood caused the banks of 23 rivers in the area where we live to break and the water to pour into small towns. Our government was sending mixed messages: that there was a danger and then other offices did not close and I was even obligated to take a driving test that very morning. It was a complete and utter mess. By the time I returned home the water started to rise so quickly that we were trapped in our home, upstairs, for three days, and we lost many of our possessions in the flooding of Emilia Romagna among which our car, electrodomestics (eg. washing machine) and furniture.

As a freelancer in a post-COVID world, these are losses I simply cannot sustain. It's been a very hard three years for me and my family. I also hate having to do a fundraiser but the government informed me yesterday that funds would be very long in coming and as in COVID times where we received zero funding, I am doubtful of this system. Hence I hesitatingly am launching this fundraiser and must do so only because we live in the middle of the country at the end of a very long road. We haven't even the option to hitchhike out of here to get to the market. Now that summer has commenced, it is untenable for us to move about without a car due to the scorching temperatures. Our vehicle is in the photo inside the circle.

Il 16-17 maggio 2023, una grave alluvione ha causato la rottura degli argini di 23 fiumi nella zona in cui viviamo e l'acqua si è riversata nelle piccole città. Il nostro governo mandava messaggi contrastanti: che c'era un pericolo e poi altri uffici non chiudevano e io ero addirittura obbligato a fare l'esame di guida quella mattina stessa. Era un disastro completo e totale. Quando sono tornato a casa l'acqua ha iniziato a salire così velocemente che siamo rimasti intrappolati nella nostra casa, al piano di sopra, per tre giorni, e abbiamo perso molti dei nostri averi nell'alluvione dell'Emilia Romagna tra cui la nostra auto, elettrodomestici (es. macchina) e mobili.

Come libero professionista in un mondo post-COVID, queste sono perdite che semplicemente non posso sostenere. Sono stati tre anni molto difficili per me e la mia famiglia. Odio anche dover fare una raccolta fondi, ma ieri il governo mi ha informato che i fondi avrebbero impiegato molto tempo ad arrivare e come ai tempi del COVID in cui non ricevevamo finanziamenti, dubito di questo sistema. Quindi, con esitazione, sto lanciando questa raccolta fondi e devo farlo solo perché viviamo nel mezzo del paese alla fine di una strada molto lunga. Non abbiamo nemmeno la possibilità di uscire di qui in autostop per andare al mercato. Ora che l'estate è iniziata, è insostenibile per noi spostarci senza auto a causa delle temperature torride.
