Flint Rocks Youth Empowerment '23 (fka Girls Rock)
This summer, the Girls Rock Flint you have come to know and love is shifting gears – and Flint’s aspiring superstars need your help! We extend endless gratitude to the Girls Rock Camp Alliance for laying the foundation for a youth based, femme led music coalition nationwide, and for extending it to Flint. The program was first introduced to Flint in 2018 and hosted at Factory 2, with sponsorship by the Flint Local 432. After a week of rock, sweat, and maybe a few prideful tears - GRF put on their first concert featuring young girls and femme identifying kids from the city. To put it lightly, it was awe inspiring. Over the last 5 years, the program has seen lots of changes and navigated through some experimental phases until hitting its full stride last year in the summer of 2022.
With full love and appreciation, we are ready to branch off on our own into an entity separate from Girls Rock. Moving forward, our team will be rebranded as the Flint Rocks Youth Empowerment Music Camp – or FRYE. We feel the direction we are heading is more encompassing of our unique and diverse crew of instructors, mentors, students, and speakers – many of whom do not identify as girls or women at all.
In addition, FRYE is a fully independent, Flint-based program with full control over how to plan our summer music camp. You can expect the same great music classes, band structure, and celebratory concert at Flint’s own Flint Local – as well as some fun new additions such as more inspirational guest speakers, demonstrations, and local field trips. Breakfast, lunch, and snacks will continue to be provided and our goal is to maintain the camp as a FREE program.
Here's where you come in. The switch to FRYE came late in the year and we are unable to obtain all the necessary grant funding to make it happen this year. But, with the abundance of rock ‘n roll momentum we gained over summer 2022, we simply can’t take a break now! While we have a fair amount of the necessary funding to make camp happen - including the Flint Local 432 donating over $1000 worth of venue rental for both the camp and concert as well as $830 raised by the Mixtape Knockoffs, Origami Phase, and Domestic Disturbance at the Corunna Road Bar fundraiser last December – we are still a few dollars short. Your contribution will make sure downtown gets its socks rocked off for summer 2023.
You can also contact program coordinator, Julie Hugunin for other opportunities for sponsorship and support.
Thank you!
