Flights to reunify Yacob's family
Donation protected
I'm raising funds to help my friend, Yacob, pay for flights for his wife and children to immigrate to Yellowknife.
Yacob is a refugee who moved to Yellowknife about 2.5 years ago. I met him about 2 years ago through the Literacy Outreach Centre's tutoring program and since then we've met for a couple hours each week to discuss topics of Canadian cultural literacy and work on different skills to help him succeed in Yellowknife.
Since arriving in Yellowknife, Yacob has been working through Immigration Canada's process of family reunification to make it possible for his wife and two young kids (5 and 3; also all refugees) to join him here. All the pieces are finally in place and he expects to be able to purchase their plane tickets soon. Unfortunately, the way this process works means that they have to buy the tickets on very short notice and Yacob expects they could cost as much as 2000 USD each or a total of almost 9000 CAD.
I'm hoping we can work together help him cover this expense. If the tickets end up costing less or we raise more, any extra money will be well spent on outfitting his family in warm clothes, covering the deposit for an apartment, or purchasing some basic furnishings.
Over the last two years, I have come to know Yacob to be a gentle soul who is extremely hard working. I am continuously impressed with his capacity for generosity despite his difficult circumstances. I've created this GoFundMe with his permission but I don't want to share too many more details here to protect his privacy. However, I'd be happy to tell you more about his story offline. Please consider donating a bit to help Yacob and his family through this big transition!
