Flat wheelchair access for when Emily comes home

 

Some of you are already aware that just before Christmas my loving, hard working, partner and beautiful mother to Zac and Charlotte, was diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer. A tumor had also spread to her spine so she had surgery to replace the affected area with titanium rods. Emily was working hard on her recovery from this surgery so she could start radiation and chemotherapy as soon as possible on the remaining cancers in her body, when cruelly she developed a blood clot on her spine and has been left paralyzed from her T2 vertebrae down.

With NSW COVID restrictions we have not been able to visit her in hospital. Those who know her know that she is strong, but she has one heck of a fight on her hands and recovery from each aspect of this journey will be long and difficult.

So many people love Emily and want to help in any way that they can. She would give a complete stranger the shirt off her own back. I know that she would never ask for money, but while we wait to see what NDIS can help us with, I know that it would ease her mind to know that we were working on a project to ready the house for her triumphant eventual return. If you’ve ever been to our house you would know how very un-wheelchair friendly it is. Emily simply wants a flat surface to transition from a car and a ramp to get into the house. She is fiercely independent and will be encouraged by the idea that we can landscape the front yard to invite her home when she is ready and able.

I just thought that this could be one way that all those who have expressed interest in being a part of this journey could come together and work towards a very meaningful and practical way to support our dear friend.
