We've all seen the flags of St George going up on lampposts across Birmingham, where they serve to exploit national pride for the benefit of the far-right agenda. While we all love our country, we believe that true patriotism is about compassion and generosity, not territorial marking or intimidation.
With financial aid from far-right activists in Britain First [1], front group Weoley Warriors claim to have put up 1,500 in and around Birmingham [2]. In response, our goal is to raise £5 for each flag for a total target of £7,500, which we will donate to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), in support of their vital cause providing essential aid and services to millions affected by conflict and displacement.
Where the "Flagger" movement has attracted controversy, Operation Raise the Cash seeks to reclaim this national symbol, which has become corrupted by division and fear, in honour of Saint George, who is not only the patron saint of England but is also revered by both Christians and Muslims in Palestine [3].
We want to show that our love for England can coexist with a commitment to global compassion. At a time when symbols of division are being used to sow discord, we invite you to join us in transforming the flag of St. George into a beacon of solidarity for those in need!
