My name is Taylor. My mother, Tami, is the matriarch and rock of my whole family. Even if you don't read this story, know that she is everything to her husband, her two daughters, her infant grandson, and everyone in between.
For decades she has been fighting problem after problem with her shoulders, joints, immune system, and cardiovascular system. These issues stem from a family history ehlers danlos syndrome-like issues and autoimmune disorders. She has had 72 surgeries to date, and is preparing for surgery number 73.
Her current battle is an odd one, sending her back and forth between her home in New Mexico to California. It started with two massive pockets of fluid, bursas, caused by irritation in her shoulders. Her shoulderblades have been fused since 1996, and it has led to a series of issues requiring frequent surgeries.
After months of draining and wound treatment to try and quell the bursas, she finally got them surgically removed, including the grinding down of damaged bone. It was discovered that the cause of the bursas was an infection in her shoulders, a 20 year old dormant cudibacteria that invaded during one of her procedures.
Currently, she is being treated for an infection acquired during treatment of the bursas. She is allergic to many antibiotics, and had to take an emergency flight to California last week as her red blood cell count dropped to fatal levels. And thats just to treat a different infection.... the treatment plan for infection in her shoulder bones is unclear.
The entire situation has left my mother exhausted. She is the toughest woman I have ever met. She deserves to be home enjoying her grandson and her garden and chicken farm. She is brilliantly smart, and raised two daughters despite a difficult life of medical trial. My father, her husband, lives for her. He is terrified and distraught, traveling loyally by her side through it all.
While theyve reached their out of pocket max for medical expenses (which was hefty regardless), the travel is expensive. Even staying at cheap AirBnBs and driving instead of flying where they are able, the trips are still costing thousands.
This is where I am hoping to lend a hand. If this fund could just help with the travel alone, it would be a huge burden off of my family. I appreciate your time and any help you can spare.
