Why? It’s the sort of challenge we all dream of completing. It’s a physical test of endurance and stamina. More so it’s a mental test of resilience in the face of danger, claustrophobia and tedium. It’s the sort of opportunity most people don’t get or won’t risk, and we’re grabbing it with both hands.
Promote - To use the row as a vehicle to promote our chosen charity - Reverse Rett, and to fundraise on behalf of the charity. We want people to understand the effects of Rett Syndrome and how supporting Reverse Rett can make a tangible difference to the research currently being carried out. (One of the team Ross McKinney’s daughter Eliza suffers from Rett Syndrome)
Inspire - To engage with our local community to inspire younger generations on how to be resilient in the face of adversity. We want children and young adults to be aware that being from a small town is not a hindrance to achieve great things – we have already established a link with the Law primary to take this forward
Compete - To be in a position to compete in the race at the highest level possible - i.e. to win the 5 man class.
“More people have climbed Everest than have rowed an ocean”
We’re also rowing to raise money for Reverse Rett – a charity dedicated to changing the lives of those suffering with Rett Syndrome; a neurological condition that’s having a profound effect on the family of one of our crew.
(Please note that this gofundme is expressly funding the campaign to complete the challenge, our intention is to have other events and the sale of the boat at the end of the campaign to raise funds for reverse rett)
