Meet Corey:

Corey Fischer is a Senior Waynesburg University student from Bethel Park studying Marketing and Communications. Corey is a member of the Waynesburg University Baseball team, pitching for the team for the past 4 years with 38 career strikeouts in 57 innings pitched and earning the Waynesburg Male Athlete of the Week award after a recent road trip to Florida. Corey is also an outstanding student, teammate, and friend. Sadly, in November of 2021, Corey was diagnosed with Ewing’s Sarcoma, a pediatric bone cancer that affects only 250 people per year.

Corey’s Story:

In the summer of 2021, Corey started to sporadically experience a nagging pain in his right side but thought nothing of it. When Corey’s Senior year began, the pain became more consistent but still could not figure out the cause of it. The pain started to become so severe that Corey was having trouble sleeping and could not drive or eat because of the intense pain he was experiencing. After months of consultations and scans, doctors from the Pittsburgh Children’s Hospital informed Corey and his family that he had a bone lesion on his right hip that was initially thought to be Lymphoma, a common form of Cancer. But after a second opinion and biopsy, it was revealed that Corey had Ewing’s Sarcoma. Ewing’s Sarcoma is a pediatric bone cancer that primarily affects children going through puberty, making Corey’s diagnosis rare. Plans were made with doctors at Pittsburgh Children’s Hospital to have Corey go through 14 rounds of chemotherapy with 49 inpatient visits, which he is halfway through. This aggressive but effective treatment plan is estimated to cost over $100,000. Despite his diagnosis, Corey has persevered and continued to play for the Waynesburg University Baseball Team through his chemotherapy treatments with the support of his friends, family, and the Waynesburg University community.

How You Can Help:

Waynesburg University and its students pride themselves on service and compassion for others, so much so that it has been written into every curriculum. Because of Waynesburg students’ passion for helping those in need, we created “Fisch for A Cure,” a charity campaign integrated with our Marketing Analytics class dedicated to raising funds for Corey’s family in this time of hardship and funding research for a potential cure for Ewing’s Sarcoma. Fisch For a Cure is also hosting a dodgeball tournament at Waynesburg University to raise funds on April 21st. Some of the proceeds from this campaign will go to helping facilitate the event in order to raise additional funds for the campaign.

If you feel a call to help Corey and his family during this difficult time, please consider donating to Fisch for A Cure; any size donation is greatly appreciated. Any donation over $250 that is given before 4/1/2022 will have the opportunity to have their name/company featured on the Fisch for A Cure benefit t-shirt with approval and consent of the donor.
