Hi! My name is Alexa, and I am a first-generation American and first-generation college student pursuing my dream of working in healthcare.
I immigrated from Mexico to the United States when I was 11 years old. Growing up, my family faced many financial and legal barriers that made education difficult to navigate. Despite these challenges, I worked hard and graduated from the University of San Diego in 2025 with a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology and a minor in Music.
My college journey was not easy. Because my parents are not U.S. citizens, applying for scholarships and financial aid was extremely complicated, and many opportunities were unavailable to me. To complete my degree, I had to take out loans that I am now responsible for paying back.
After graduating, I struggled to find work in my field and have continued working in the restaurant industry while trying to build a future for myself. During this time and after volunteering at a children's hospital for a year, I realized I wanted to dedicate my life to healthcare and helping others more directly. I completed my CNA course and recently began my RN nursing program in May.
Unfortunately, I was once again unable to qualify for enough financial aid or funding, so I am paying for nursing school completely out of pocket while working minimum wage. At the same time, I help support my household, contribute to bills, care for my younger brother, and help take care of our pets while balancing school and work.
I am creating this GoFundMe because I truly want the opportunity to continue my education and build a stable future through nursing. Any donation, no matter the amount, would help me pay for tuition, books, supplies, transportation, and other school expenses so I can continue pursuing my dream of becoming a registered nurse.
During this time I am consistently applying to multiple job positions, and also carrying out side jobs and small tasks I can get paid for.
Thank you so much for reading my story, supporting me, and believing in my future. Even sharing this fundraiser would mean the world to me.
