First-Gen Student’s Dream: A Semester in Rome

Donation protected
Hi, my name is Tyler.

As a first-generation student, my journey through high school was anything but easy. Coming from a background where college didn’t feel like an option, I struggled to find motivation and direction. At just 16, I moved out on my own, feeling invisible to the world of education and opportunity. With little support and an underwhelming resume, I couldn’t see a clear path forward.

But everything changed when I found inspiration in the people around me—friends, mentors, and counselors who believed in me even when I didn’t believe in myself. Against all odds, I graduated high school in 2023—barely, but I did it. Holding that diploma was a moment I’ll never forget.

College always felt out of reach, but I took a leap of faith and enrolled. And now, for the first time, I see a future worth building. I’ve started putting myself out there—applying for internships, jobs, and scholarships—things I once thought weren’t meant for people like me. But I’m realizing now that I can make something of myself. I finally see the potential that others saw in me all along.

Earlier this year, I applied for something that felt like a distant dream: a semester in Rome. And to my complete surprise—I got in.

I never experienced much as a child, so I have had a lot of firsts as an adult. My younger self would be so proud of me. This would be my first experience outside of the country, and it means the world to me.

I’m a full-time student working a full-time job, doing everything in my power to make this happen—taking on extra hours, applying for financial aid, searching for scholarships, and even looking into loans. Despite all of that, I still can’t cover the full cost on my own.

The funds raised here would help pay for my apartment, flights, food, and classes during my semester in Rome. The deadline to secure everything is just a few months away, and time is moving fast. I have very little to my name, but I’m giving this dream everything I’ve got.

If you’re able to donate—or even just share my story—I’d be endlessly grateful. Every bit of support brings me one step closer to a life-changing opportunity I never thought would be possible.

Thank you for believing in me, and for helping me turn this dream into reality.
