Hello, my name is Maria Cruz. I am 18 years old, graduating high school this May, and attending university beginning Fall 2026.
To me, pursuing higher education has always been more than getting a degree. To me, it represents opportunity, stability, and the chance to build a better, brighter future for my family. As the eldest and only daughter, as well as a first generation American, I carry with me my parents combined sacrifices and dreams with each and every step I take.
My parents are immigrants, who have worked tirelessly to give our family a chance at a better life. My dad is a welder and the sole provider of our family, while my mom stays at home taking care of my younger brothers and I. He works 12-hour night shifts, six days a week, earning around $40,000-50,000 a year depending on supply demand.
Here's the problem: even after receiving scholarships and grants, my first year of college will still cost me around $19,000-- nearly half of my father's annual income. While I've been offered good financial aid at another school, that will only be applicable once I transfer there my sophomore year, meaning that for the first year, my family will somehow have to come up with the whopping sum mentioned above. I cannot ask my family to carry this financial burden alone. My dad has told me countless of times to 'not worry about it,' but I just can't help it. He's old, and losing his vision due to his line of work. I can see the tiredness in his eyes each and every time I meet his gaze.
I am doing everything I can-- applying for scholarships, saving money, and reaching out for support, yet nothing. ANY contribution, no matter how small, would mean the absolute world to me.
If you're unable to donate, that's okay! I appreciate you taking the time to read my story, and ask that you please share this fundraiser!
Thank you so much for your time, kindness, and support. It truly means the world to me and my family. :)
