¿Por qué estoy pidiendo apoyo?

Hola, mi nombre es Joseph Caleb Vetter y soy un estudiante universitario de primera generación de San Juan, Puerto Rico.

Este otoño comenzaré mis estudios en Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI), donde cursaré un bachillerato en Ingeniería Eléctrica y de Computadoras — una carrera que refleja mi compromiso de crear infraestructura resiliente para comunidades como la mía. Ser aceptado fue un logro enorme, y he trabajado arduamente para obtener becas, desarrollar proyectos de investigación y prepararme académicamente.

Pero la realidad es que esta transición no ha sido fácil, y estoy pidiendo ayuda porque, sinceramente, no puedo hacerlo solo.

¿Qué cambió?

Hasta hace poco, creía que contaría con el apoyo económico de mi familia para iniciar esta nueva etapa. Sin embargo, mi padre sufrió una lesión espinal que lo ha dejado incapacitado para trabajar, lo que cambió nuestra situación económica de forma drástica.

Ahora soy responsable de cubrir casi todos los gastos relacionados con mudarme a Massachusetts y establecerme para tener un inicio sólido en la universidad. Esto se suma a un déficit en la matrícula que las becas no logran cubrir del todo.

He comenzado a trabajar para aportar, y estoy manejando mi presupuesto con mucho cuidado. Pero a pesar de mis esfuerzos, hay gastos esenciales que simplemente no puedo cubrir por mi cuenta en tan poco tiempo.

Por eso estoy recurriendo a ustedes. No porque me rinda, sino porque estoy decidido a seguir adelante.

¿Por qué la universidad es tan importante para mí?

Mi interés por la ingeniería comenzó desde pequeño, al ver a mi padre reparar teléfonos y aparatos electrónicos para ayudarnos a salir adelante. Esa curiosidad se transformó, con el tiempo, en una pasión por entender los principios fundamentales de la electricidad y por resolver problemas concretos utilizando esos conocimientos.

Después del Huracán María, fui testigo de lo vulnerable que es la infraestructura en Puerto Rico y de cómo afectó profundamente la vida diaria. Ese momento me hizo visualizar claramente mi propósito: usar la ingeniería como herramienta para mejorar la vida en mi isla.

Desde entonces, diseñé un prototipo de poste eléctrico retráctil para reducir los apagones prolongados en zonas propensas a eventos atmosféricos, un proyecto que recibió reconocimiento tanto a nivel regional como internacional. Gracias a esta iniciativa, me convertí en Amazon Future Engineer Scholar, obteniendo también un internado a través del programa.

Pero más allá de los logros, la universidad representa algo profundamente personal: una oportunidad para romper con el ciclo de inestabilidad económica que ha marcado a mi familia por generaciones, y un camino hacia la estabilidad a largo plazo, no solo para mí, sino para los que vienen después.

¿Qué cubrirá tu apoyo?

Estoy buscando recaudar $10,000 dólares para cubrir los gastos más urgentes durante esta transición, que incluyen:

Why I’m Asking for Support

Hi, my name is Joseph Caleb Vetter, and I’m a first-generation college student from San Juan, Puerto Rico.

This fall, I’ll be attending Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) to study Electrical and Computer Engineering; a major that aligns with my goal of creating resilient infrastructure for communities like mine.

Getting accepted was a huge milestone, and I’ve worked hard to earn scholarships, complete research, and prepare myself academically.

But the truth is, this transition hasn’t been easy, and I’m reaching out because I truly can’t do it alone.

What Changed

Until recently, I believed my family would be able to support me through the first leg of this journey. But after my father suffered a spinal injury that left him unable to work, our financial situation shifted dramatically. I’m now responsible for covering nearly all the costs of moving to Massachusetts and setting myself up for success in college, on top of managing a tuition gap that scholarships didn’t fully cover.

I’ve picked up work to help make ends meet, and I’m budgeting carefully. But despite my best efforts, there are still key expenses I simply can’t afford on my own in such a short timeframe.

That’s why I’m asking for your help; because I’m determined to keep moving forward.

Why College Matters to Me

My interest in engineering started early as I watched my dad repair phones and small electronics to help keep us afloat. Over time, that curiosity grew into a drive to understand the fundamentals of electricity and electrical components, and to solve problems in real, tangible ways using those very principles.

After Hurricane Maria, I saw how fragile Puerto Rico’s infrastructure really was, and how deeply it affected daily life. That moment was what led me to fully visualize myself using engineering to make a difference in my homeland.

Since then, I’ve designed a retractable utility pole prototype to reduce risk of long-term power outages in disaster-prone areas, and received recognition at both regional and international science fairs. It's because of this project that I’m also an Amazon Future Engineer Scholar, and was awarded an internship as part of that opportunity.

But beyond the awards and achievements, college represents something highly personal: a path to long-term stability for myself and my family, a chance to break a cycle of economic hardship that’s lasted for generations, and an opportunity to make right by my parents' efforts to raise me.
