Love, Photography and One Voice

In August of 2015, with your help, I am deeply humbled and happy to announce that I have an opportunity to fulfill a lifelong dream. I have always wanted to work on an international trip with the goal of improving the lives of children, I had always assumed my role would be in a medical capacity. Fortunately life does not evolve around assumptions. Robbie Schaefer and One Voice, have invited me to teach a group of teens in Nicaragua  photography as a means of visual storytelling. This collaboration is grounded in honoring the participants perspective while acquiring a new skill set for self discovery and reflection.

As a mother of teens who are finding their voice and as a person who has worked hard to find her own, I am honored to have the opportunity to share navigation tools. Coincidentally, serendipitously or perfectly this trip will begin just 2 days after sending my eldest off to her own adventure, her first year of college. Not surprisingly, I’ve been thinking  a lot over the last year or two about how critical it is that we create space for true feelings to emerge and independence to grow.  What about for children in situations where it might not be a given to be heard? This seems like a good  time to consider how I can continue to empower a child’s voice, but maybe this time in a more universal way. The addition of having a chance to document a One Voice mission and help further the good they put in the world strengthens my commitment exponentially.

Together using cameras, journals and a travel ready printer, teens from Nicaragua will get a first chance at what it means to capture and document snippets of their lives from their own unique and powerful perspective.

This skill, the ability to share your thoughts and capture your feelings through journalling and visual story telling  is one that is proven around the world to increase confidence, deepen commitment to education and open doors to more connection, creativity and love.

Will you help me bring my gifts to the world in this unique way? I am looking for friends and supporters who are looking for ways to invest in a more hopeful world and who trust me to share my gifts in a way that will make a lifelong impact.

My plan is to bring a camera for every child, a couple printers, journals, ink, paper. I would plan to leave a journal with each child filled with their collection of photos and stories and supplies to continue their discovery.  My hope is that there be immeasurable intagibles too. I'd also like to leave behind at least one of the cameras and perhaps a printer/supplies at the school these children attend. If there is enough money, I'd love some help with my airfare too. When I return I'd like to share the curriculum I develop with other kids in other places and spaces.

I hope you will join me.

In loving gratitude-
Laura
