First Responder Hospitalized With Covid

Donation protected
On July 26, 2021 Brian was diagnosed with COVID. At this time myself and our oldest daughter also had it. He did okay for a few days but quickly went downhill. He was running really high fevers (103.6) that would hardly break with around the clock medication. Before we knew it he was also fighting diarrhea and vomiting. I was making sure he had plenty of fluids, breathing treatments, and all the medication he could possibly take OTC. On Wednesday August 4, 2021 his doctor asked that I bring him for a repeat CXR some labs and blood cultures because he just couldn’t shake the fevers. We got his CXR results quickly which showed he had inflammation and air pockets in both lungs, the images he had just 3 days prior we’re completely normal. We got back home he got into the bed and wanted to take a nap. I got on my computer to finish up some work for my job. Around 5:20 that evening he began gasping for air. Working in the medical field myself I quickly realized he was in trouble and I needed to get him to the hospital quickly. One the way there he was almost unresponsive, his nail beds were blue, his lips were blue and gray, and he couldn’t lift his head or open his eyes. His breathing was very labored. Once we got to the ER he was in acute respiratory failure with hypoxia. His BP was 80/40 HR 122 and O2 was between 86-88%
His kidneys had almost shut down and his blood was as thick as syrup. The doctor told me had I not been home when this happened I could have came home to a dead husband and had I not been pushing the fluids and electrolytes I was he would have likely been in complete kidney failure requiring dialysis. They quickly got him going on fluids and medication. He was on 5L of oxygen and sats hovered around 90%. He was admitted into ICU which’s as the hardest thing I ever had to deal with. He’s a very healthy person with little to no major medical issues. While all of this was happening his mom was on hospice slowly slipping away from end stage Alzheimer’s. Our goal was to get his fever under control so he could at least go say his goodbyes but sadly that never happened before he wound up in the hospital. He spent 2 days in ICU and once he was stable enough they moved him to the Covid unit. He’s been a strong fighter and we know he will win this battle through all of the prayers and his own strength he will get through this. His oxygen had to be increased to 10LPM continuous flow because his oxygen levels stayed between 90-91% while at rest and lower 80’s if he was moving, eating, or talking. It broke my heart to hear him gasp. With the hospital rules we have not been able to see him which has been extremely hard on everyone. Sadly his mom passed away Friday August 6, 2021 and that broke my heart. He never got to say goodbye to her. With these circumstances the hospital was courteous enough to allow me one hour in person with him so that I could tell him in person about his moms passing. That was a bittersweet hour with him and one that I will never forget, I only wish to have more time with him. His girls and I miss him as do the rest of his family. I’ve felt like I’ve been on the worst train ride of my life with the darkest cloud hanging over me and I pray to God for it to be moved away from our family. Just when we thought it couldn’t get worse I was hit with more devastating news. The police department that my husband works for offers long term disability that requires you be out 90 days before you can file for it but not short term disability so years ago he took out Aflac so he would have that coverage in the event anything ever happened to him. When I spoke to his HR department Friday morning I sadly found out that he did NOT have the short term disability plan. At this point my heart sank. Here I am still recovering from Covid myself, my husband in the hospital in critical condition, my mother in law died and now this! Honestly wasn’t sure how much more I could take. He does not have a lot of PTO or sick days left which leaves us in a bad financial crisis. Most of our LEO family knows that officers don’t make a lot. The money comes from details, grants, and court. With the unknown of how long he is going to be out of work and knowing my family can’t survive on my income alone I’ve been left feeling so unsure and worried about what to do. We have been so blessed with an abundance of prayers and positivity being sent our way and I can never thank everyone enough for that. I’ve had many people reaching out asking how they can help and asking if I can please set up a GFM account so they can help in this unfortunate situation that we are in. With my head held high I am waving my white flag and I surrender I’m asking for help in anyway possible. If you can’t donate we ask that you pray for us and our family during this very difficult time. We thank you from the bottom of our hearts. I’m trying to remember this too shall pass ❤️‍
