Kikiwak is a not-for-profit organization that was founded in 2020. Our team is an assortment of educators, traditional knowledge keepers and artists all with Indigenous lineage. Our goal is to bring attention to world about the destitute living conditions that plague our First Nations communities.
There is an ongoing housing, water and food crisis throughout the First Nation's communities in North America. This has led to many social problems. Due to housing shortages which leads to overcrowding, contaminated water, animals disappearing due to climate change, the list can go on and on. These social injustices have led to a significant health crisis, from diabetes to a suicide epidemic.
Kikiwak has come up with a building model through extensive research into other sustainable builders worldwide. A cost-efficient building technique with very few toxins in the building materials, which will positively impact people's health moving forward into the future. The homes are run solely off green-friendly energy, solar, wind, and micro-hydro. This model will be a pivotal contributor to the First Nations housing, food and water crisis.
We are currently developing an educational component to have workshops with youth on the land, through zoom and an online video reference library.
The workshops will consist of alternative energy and sustainable building methods, traditional knowledge, arts and crafts, hunting, and gathering traditional foods, and harvesting medicines.
We are incorporating the history and teachings of Turtle Island from a First Nation's standpoint. We believe the path to healing and reconciliation is through our youth. The children are our future leaders and decision-makers.
Our board members have dedicated the last five months, all with no pay and investing from their own pockets. We are trying to generate enough funds to hire an executive director who will seek out grants and run the day-to-day operations. To hire a web developer and apply strategic marketing to spread this critical message on sustainable land and housing development. Hire individuals to help with filming of the entire process for our video library.
At this point in history, we must begin to work on genuine reconciliation between the settlers and the First Nations of Turtle Island (AKA: North America). We need to break down religious barriers and borders, untie once again as the human race and begin to heal Mother Earth from the effects of our unsustainable practices.
Your support to bring this vision to reality is greatly appreciated. This project will have a lasting impact on the First Nations housing, food and water crisis for generations to come.
