Thank you so much for visiting this gofund me page. First and foremost, my name is Jon Rua and I'm a multi-hyphenate artist whose been fortunate enough to span my career across various mediums while wearing multiple hats. Here is a blip about me:
The recipient of the 2022 SDCF Breakout Award, Jon Rua is recognized as a "rising star" choreographer for his innovative work on the stage. With four Tony Nominated Broadway shows under his belt, originating roles in Hamilton, Spongebob Squarepants, Hands on a Hardbody, having his debut with In the Heights, it’s clear Jon’s creative voice has been an integral part of today’s Broadway movement. And now, Jon's artistic vision and choreography are determined to trailblaze something we have yet to see. FIRST GEN, a new play with movement and music, and it needs your aid. But WHY HELP?...
FIRST GEN, a new play with movement & music is a story that NEEDS to be seen, heard, and felt. The issue is we don't have the funds to realize this residency. Although, I have been selected for a residency at the Vineyard Arts Project, there is no budget for Travel or Payment for the incredible talent to join me. The residency is June 24-July 1, so we have to raise the money quickly or risk losing the amazing opportunity to develop the play at the Vineyard. BUT WHY DOES "FIRST GEN" NEED to EXIST!? Sometimes a summary doesn't speak to the life of a piece, so here's a link to a preview of what we have workshopped thus far:
Summary:
FIRST GEN (working title) is a playful, thought-provoking, energy-pulsing, new play with movement and music, that explores a First Generation American Son's will to honor his Colombian Mother’s sacrifices and her unknown life. As the mother undergoes chemotherapy treatments, the Son strives to create a memoir for his family, whose history he knows nothing of. Wrestling with his identity, struggling with the hardships of their reality, and fighting for relevance in the world, the Son discovers the only possibility to be seen exists solely in his imagination. With a company of six including the lead creative, Jon Rua, FIRST GEN unveils the power of hope and resilience as it manifests in a bold reimagining of the American coming-of-age story.
The monies donated would go to covering all travel expenses for the creative team and cast to come to the Vineyard Residency. Any surplus would be equally paid out to the artist for their time and talent.
Any donation is welcomed and appreciated. This is a timely matter since we CAN NOT commit to the residency if the fiscal goal of this fundraiser isn't achieved. I thank you in advance for your contributions and rest assured if the Residency happens, I will give every ounce of my life to elevate this piece to its next level.
With Endless Gratitude,
Jon Rua
PS. if you donate, I will provide you a free tutorial of a dance I made :). Should you want that kind of thing. Heads up though, its ADVANCED!
