First Church In Woburn: Restoration

Donation protected
In 2011 The First Congegational Church in Woburn was  damaged by Hurricane Irene. In 2012, It was hit by Hurricane Sandy, which caused more harm, along with structual damage to the steeple. We are looking for funds to restore and repair the church, to hopefully get it back to its original glory.

The church was built in 1860 to house members of The congregation which had outgrown its previous churches. The Congregation was established in 1642 by Puritans and is one of the oldest in the United States.  This Beautifully designed building was designed to hold 1,500 members for every service. The best known feature of the building is its nearly 200 (196 ft) steeple, which is thought to be the tallest wooden steeple in North America.  The sanctuary inside is the oldest, and largest Santuary in the world without interior supports.
Also inside the wide open sanctuary is the historic organ. The organ is an E.G.&G. Hook Opus 283 pipe organ, one of only six known to exsist. Due to it's size, it was assembeled in the church during its construction. This bulding has been on the national register of Historical places since January 6th, 1992, 25 years ago to the day. This year We are celebrating the 375th year of the church, and would love to restore it to its original glory.

The damages to the church have haunted our town for years. Blue tarps have draped its steeple and front enterance walls, covering the visual damage and to prevent debris from falling onto the town center below. Sadly, the church has not been in great shape for a long, long time. The entire building has been slowly deteriorating for years. The paint is chipped and the siding is falling off all over the building. The beautiful slate roof has been damaged overtime and is estimated at 500,000$ to repair.  All of these problems have persisted, but have never been bad enough to endager the church. Unforunetly the damage to the steeple from the storms is structural. The steeple itself is leaning, and is in danger of being condemed without proper repairs. If  this happens, the congregation will no longer be allowed to use this wonderful house of worship. In order to repair the steeple we would need a significant amount of money, but we are not sure exactly how much. 500,000$ is a good estimate for the steeple, but to repair the whole church it could potentially cost millions of dollars. The 250,000$ that we are asking for is only a portion of what we likely need, but it should be enough to make important structual impovements.

In hopes to restore the church back to its original glory, any donation amount is greatly appreciated. From a single dollar to a hundred, every one counts.  For those that donate 30$ or more, we have something to send you! In cooporation with "The Cats Meow" we have produced a wonderful wooden piece depicting the church in all its glory.  We will be in contact with you to help deliver your replica! Thank you for reading and for helping us out! All are welcome to visit and attend service if you'd like. We are located in Woburn center, you can't miss us!
