'Fires in the Heather' - A Story of Spirit and Determination
Against the stunning canvas of the Scottish Highlands and Edinburgh's historic streets, 'Fires in the Heather' tells the extraordinary story of Mavis, an 80-year-old cyclist who refuses to let age define her limits. Inspired by real-life Scottish hero Mavis Paterson, our film follows this remarkable woman as she pedals toward a royal ceremony at Edinburgh Castle – not dressed in typical cycling gear, but in an elegant pink evening gown and her trusty (if slightly crooked) white helmet.
What begins as an unconventional journey becomes a celebration of the human spirit. When Mavis has a close call with a pothole, she's rescued by Declan, a working-class van driver who can't quite believe what he's seeing. Their brief encounter reveals the kindness of strangers and the unexpected connections that shape our days. At a local bike shop, we discover just how beloved Mavis truly is – a woman who has raised over half a million pounds for cancer research while shattering every stereotype about what it means to grow older.
The film's most poignant moment comes when Mavis pauses by the river to release a letter to her departed loved ones – a quiet act that reveals the grief and love that fuel her extraordinary journey. As she continues toward her destination, we realise we're witnessing more than a bike ride; we're seeing a masterclass in living fully, grieving honestly, and finding purpose at any age.
'Fires in the Heather' concludes with breathtaking imagery as a mystical guardian spirit watches over Mavis from the Highland hills – a visual poem about the unseen forces that protect and inspire us.
This short film serves as our gateway to a full-length feature celebrating Mavis's complete life story. Together, we can create an inspiring family film that honours real heroes and reminds us all that adventure, purpose, and wonder know no age limit.
