My grandma and I have always shared a close bond, living together in our apartment and supporting each other through life’s ups and downs. Recently, a fire swept through the basement level of our multi-family private dwelling. Even though the fire was contained to the basement, it caused enough damage and disruption to displace us from our apartment for what looks to be a long period of time. The experience has been overwhelming, and we’re still coming to terms with the loss of our safe space and the memories we built there.

Right now, we are staying with family while we search for a new apartment. Even with a roof over our heads, there are many unexpected costs—replacing the essentials we lost, paying for storage, and covering expenses as we look for a new place to call home.
