Firefly for Lizzie

Donation protected
Hi everyone!  I'm Liz Foster and I live in Viola, Idaho.  Well, outside of Viola, up the gravel road in amongst the wheat and lentil fields.

I'm raising money to defray the costs of adding a Firefly mobility drive to my wheelchair - I'm getting more and more housebound as time passes.  All donations will go directly towards the cost of the Firefly.  If extra money is donated, it will be used to defray other medical costs.

My story:

In 1975, I was in a motorcycle accident that caused extensive damage to my spine.  By the grace of God, I had no real symptoms until 2004, when I ruptured four lumbar discs.

Since 2004, my condition has slowly deteriorated - I have degenerative disc disease and degenerative osteoarthritis throughout my spine.  I started out using canes, then crutches for mobility aids.  I now use either a small mobility scooter or a manual wheelchair.

I have since developed osteoarthritis in both hands and both knees.  The arthritic thumbs make it very painful to use the manual wheelchair.

I'm a very good nature photographer, specializing in macro photos.

I am no longer able to get to the areas I used to go for photography.  Also, since I live in a rural area, my small mobility scooter is little help - it has 8" wheels and a 3" ground clearance.  I can no longer even get around our property - neither the scooter nor a manual wheelchair can cope with the terrain.

I'm increasingly house-bound and my quality of life is poor.

Rio Mobility makes a powered front attachment for wheelchairs called the Firefly.  The 12.5" powered front wheel, combined with the 24" wheels on the wheelchair, will allow me to return to the places I photograph.  It will allow me to go fishing again.  It will make it possible to get around our property.

Rio Mobility Firefly Information

The catch is that it costs $2,400.  I'm on SSDI and Medicare won't pay anything unless the primary use is indoors.  Our house doors and halls are too narrow for any mobility aids, so Medicare won't pay anything.

So, as much as I hate asking for charity, I am.

Thank you for reading this and bless you for donating whatever you can,

Lizzie
