Firefighter Battling Rare Cancer, Matt Bernelis

Matt Bernelis is a firefighter/paramedic who has given his service to many communities, with the latest being the City of Livonia for the past 14 years. Matt and his wife Terri have been married for 9 years, and have 4 year old triplets Gabriel, Landyn and Gracie. Matt also has two stepsons, Zack and Alex.
In June 2019 Matt was diagnosed with Neuroendocrine Cancer with tumors in his pancreas and small intestine. As shocking and unbelievable as the news was, Matt and Terri tackled it head on and began the whirlwind of consultations, test, scans and biopsy’s to find the answers they would need in order to go forward with treatments.
However, through all of the testing it has been discovered Matt’s cancer is very rare. With this rare type of cancer, it requires a full multi disciplinary approach. Including GI doctors, oncologists, endocrinologist and a surgical team. The decision was made to travel to Rochester, Minnesota to the Mayo Clinic.
Within in the month of June two trips have already been made to the Mayo Clinic, for required consultations, testing and scans. The team of doctors handling Matt’s care have decided the next step in treatment will require a major operation.
Matt will be required to return to the Mayo clinic the first week of July for more pre-op testing and consultations. His surgery is scheduled for the end of July.
With the cost of daily living expenses, missing work for both Matt and Terri and the numerous trips to Minnesota, a financial burden has been placed on this family. Unfortunately they are not in a position to allow pride to stand in the way of Matt’s battle.
Along with the thoughts, prayers and well wishes already so graciously given, please open your heart for this father and his beautiful family as they deal with all the emotional and financial struggles of fighting this disease.
