Please read our story....
For over a year and a half my sister-in-law and my nephew have been homeless due to a catastrophic fire in their home thought to have started after a power cut caused a power surge. The fire started in the early hours of May 13th 2015 whilst Jo was asleep in bed and her husband was in hospital.
.
The National Grid is refusing to cooperate or investigate as to whether the power cut that day could have been the cause. It took five fire-engines five hours to bring the blaze under control.
Her husband, Freddy, is still in hospital and his health is deteriorating so Jo has been left struggling to deal with everything alone.
After holding insurance for 38 years of married life Jo found out that their home was uninsured when she contacted Esure to tell them about the fire. This was devastating. The policy had lapsed just a few weeks earlier. For the past four years it had automatically renewed however, due to a change in the payment methods, this hadn't happened.
The case was taken to the Ombudsman who ruled in favour of Esure stating that they could not force Esure to pay out and, disappointingly, Esure refused to take any of Jo and Freddy's personal circumstances in to account. They wouldn't even offer a token payment for all the years they had been insured with them.
Joshua, her son, lost everything he owned as his room was in the loft which is where the fire started; all he had left were the clothes he had gone out in. Even his job as his father's carer had gone.
Understandably both of them have struggled ever since. As if the fire wasn't catastrophic enough six months later, in November, Jo's Dad ( my father-in-law) died . Then after celebrating Christmas as best we could and hoping for a happier new year, in February 2016 , her Mum died too.
Jo is now 60 and has no way of earning enough money to repair the house or pay back the mortgage which will be due in a couple of years. As her husband was an invalid they were only paying the interest on the mortgage. She had already arranged for an estate agent to value the property so that they could downsize and pay off the mortgage. Sadly that never happened because of the fire.
After so long without a roof the house is now in a dreadful state. We desperately need to get it repaired and get their family back on their feet.
Josh is now having to live at his brother's girlfriends parents' house and Jo lives with us at the moment and they have basically been abandoned by the state. No one will help them. PLEASE will you?
The money will be spent on repairing the house as soon as possible to make it reinhabitable. We would not be able to thank you enough for any donation you can make, no matter how small; but we will be forever grateful.
Thank you.
