On July 6th, a tragic fire swept through the home of Annette and her daughter Kylie in Arctic Village. The fire spread so quickly that their son only had time to grab the TV before escaping. They lost everything, including new furniture, books, their freezer, food, clothes, electronics, and their newly repaired ATV. They are also desperately searching for Kylie's beloved cat, Mochi.

We are incredibly grateful that everyone is safe and heartened by the immediate response from our community. While we are working hard in the village to clean up and build a new home for Annette and Kylie before winter sets in, there are significant monetary needs that we can only meet with your help.

I moved to Arctic Village two years ago, and Annette graciously took me into her home for my first winter. She is a pillar of our community, providing food, clothing, a safe place to laugh and cry, teaching traditional skills, and offering her time selflessly to our people, village, and visitors. She is also the primary caretaker for Dr. Reverend First Traditional Chief Trimble Gilbert and Mary Gilbert.

She and her late husband, Bobby Gilbert, waited for this new house after a previous fire. Moving into this home without him and now losing everything again has been devastating.

Her daughter Kylie, who is my age, has become the sweetest friend to me. We enjoyed watching Studio Ghibli movies and cooking Japanese food together.

Annette's family will use any donations to purchase immediate needs such as food and clothing (including winter gear). The cost of shipping items to rural Alaska is very high, so funds will also help cover freight expenses.

This kind family, which has lost its home for the second time, would appreciate any contribution.
