Help Rebuild Amy Slosky’s Shoemaking Studio After a Devastating Fire

On April 23rd, a tragic fire tore through the historic Dayton Boot Factory in East Vancouver, destroying my studio and devastating my work. The fire, which started in the restaurant next door, ravaged the second floor and roof of our building. As a passionate shoemaker and small business owner, this loss is more than the destruction of my space—it’s the loss of a sanctuary, a piece of Vancouver’s heritage, and the heart of my craft.

I moved into the Dayton Boot Factory in 2023, after the pandemic forced me, like many other businesses, to adapt and overcome countless challenges. Dayton quickly became a home—for me and my work. I found community there, sharing space with a small group of incredible bootmakers and artists in the vibrant Hastings-Sunrise neighborhood. The factory, full of history and heart, became a place where I could heal, rebuild, and grow after years of uncertainty.

Now, that space is gone. The fire destroyed my tools, machines, materials, and years’ worth of custom, handmade patterns and documentation. It was a small collection, but it was invaluable. Losing pieces from my archive has been especially painful. I had everything invested—my entire savings went toward four years of shoemaking school in Florence, Italy. That’s where I acquired most of my tools, leather, and supplies—items that are often hard to find in North America. In 2018, I returned to Vancouver and opened a small shop, where I’ve been making custom, handmade, Italian-inspired footwear for both men and women.

It’s hard to put into words what this setback means—but that’s what it is: a setback. And with enough support and a bit of luck, I believe I can rebuild.

I’m incredibly grateful for the kind words and encouragement I’ve received so far. Your support truly means the world. Please consider donating or sharing this campaign. And if you’re able, I urge you to also support the other artists, makers, and small businesses affected by this fire.

Thank you again,
With love,
Amy
