On July 25th, our dear friend and coworker, Claire, experienced a tragedy no one should ever have to face. While returning home from a much-needed vacation, Claire and her family received a devastating call: a massive fire had broken out in their apartment building. By the time they arrived, it was too late—their entire home and the neighboring building were completely destroyed. In a matter of moments, they lost everything.

Claire is one of the most selfless, kind-hearted, and quietly strong people you could ever meet. She always puts others before herself and brings light, warmth, and compassion to everyone around her. Now, she is facing the unimaginable. She returned with only a week’s worth of summer clothes in her suitcase—everything else was gone.

By sheer luck and courage, everyone made it out alive—but not without injury and trauma. Claire’s daughter Kelly’s boyfriend, Liam, suffered 2nd- and 3rd-degree burns on his hands, a fractured toe, and a sprained wrist while escaping. He was forced to jump from a second-story window to survive. The emotional and physical toll of that day will stay with them forever—but so will the resilience and strength they’ve shown in the aftermath.

The only item salvaged was a fireproof box containing vital documents. Everything else—clothing, furniture, family photos, keepsakes, and lifelong memories—was lost.

Despite this unthinkable loss, Claire remains incredibly optimistic and grounded in grace. She is currently staying with a close friend while her family searches for a new home. Kelly is staying with Liam’s grandmother as he recovers from his injuries. The Red Cross has been wonderful, and the family is grateful to have had insurance—but as anyone who’s faced a disaster like this knows, insurance alone can’t rebuild a life.
