Meet Fionn Silke from Oughterard in Galway. Fionn is 17 and suffered a life-changing injury during the summer of 2022.

Most years, we take a photo of Fionn in August with the same flower. Here he is in 2016, 2018, 2020 and 2021.

Fun loving and full of beans he loved the outdoors while growing up.

Fishing and football are two boyhood passions. In football he started with Oughterard AFC before moving to play with Salthill Devon …..

….. and also played with the Galway Town Team ………

before joining Mayo to play in the U15 National League, seen here playing against Galway United in Oranmore

On July 11th 2022, Fionn suffered a C6/C7 Spinal Cord Injury (SC) after he hit a sandbank while diving into the sea.

He was rushed to hospital by ambulance to the Birjeli Brijev hospital in Mostar where there was a Neurology Team on standby. Within an hour of arriving at the hospital, he was in theatre and underwent five hours of neurosurgery.

Fionn spent ten days in ICU in Mostar and was then taken by Air Ambulance on July 21st to the ICU in the Mater Hospital in Dublin.

Fionn then spent two weeks in the Mater Hospital ICU/HDU before being transferred to the Mater Spinal Unit.

Fionn spent twelve weeks of the autumn stabilising in Mater SU before transferring to the National Rehabilitation Hospital (NRH).

In August 2022, we got a flower from Bath Lane Florists next to the Mater Hospital.

Fionn arrived in the NRH on October 21st for the next phase of his rehabilitation.

This NRH phase will be spent preparing Fionn to live as independently as possible with his injury, paralysis below his chest.

However, there is hope that Fionn will continue to improve, particularly with the help of the pioneering work driven by Ken Ware in his NeuroPhysics Therapy Institute in Australia.
Ken has had remarkable success with SCI impacted patients including with John MacClean.

Here is a short video about Ken and John: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7kOT-54vZpc .

Fionn discussed his case with Ken in December 2022.

Fionn will now progress his treatment with Ken in his NeuroPhysics Therapy Institute Clinic in mid-2023.

This Fionndraising is to help Fionn continue his recovery.

Fionndraiser will kick-off with a Fashion Show and Auction in the Clayton Hotel in Galway on February, Thursday 16th, 2023. A GoFundMe page will also run in parallel with this. Opportunities to support Fionndraiser include buying tickets for the Fashion Show (available now through Eventbrite or by contacting [email redacted]), participating in the Auction, contributing to the GoFundMe page, and for businesses as corporate sponsors of the Fashion Show.
All proceeds of Fionndraiser events will go towards the costs of Fionn’s travel to, accommodation and treatment at the Ken Ware Clinic in Queensland, Australia in 2023, including all equipment and other consequential associated costs."
Thank You.
(The Fionndraiser Team is a group made up of family and friends of Fionn, the ultimate beneficiary. The Fundraiser Team will transfer all funds raised to Paul Silke, Fionn’s Dad, who will administer the funds on Fionn’s behalf.)
