Finlay Nayler Medical Fund

When the unfathomable happens, we look to our community for help.

Finlay Nayler (Fin), an active, feisty, healthy, athletic 15 year old was experiencing slight discomfort while riding his bike. His mom Darcy acted quickly to take him to the ER and after a short and extremely long 4 days, Finlay was diagnosed with an extremely rare type of pediatric cancer, alveolar rhabdomyosarcoma. This cancer is so rare it only affects 300 kids a year. Fin is so brave and asked what he needed to do and the treatment is already set and starts now! The treatment is intense, he will have chemo for 42 weeks (one over night a week and once a week in clinic), then surgery once the tumor has shrunk enough to remove, weeks of radiation after surgery all while continuing his 42 weeks of chemo. This is a "tricky bugger to fight" but brave mighty Fin is up to it! So his next 18 months will be spent FIGHTING this with all his might....  Once he has completed those first 42 weeks he will have maintenance chemo and that could be a pill, an infusion, it just depends on what has happened to the tumors. We were also told that due to this HARD fight Fin will get sick and will end up back in the hospital for infections.

Darcy Nayler is a U City/ Richmond Heights/ Brentwood single mom and nurse who has dedicated her life and career to helping others. Darcy will need to take a break from work for a while to focus on Fin’s healing and Liam's recovery from open heart surgery (which occurred the same day Fin was diagnosed).  August 2nd will be a day no one in the family will forget, Liam was having open heart surgery, Fin was having surgery to remove his tumor, they were told it was a “progressive cancer” and then both boys were hallmates in the ICU at Cardinal Glennon. Treatments will start quickly.  Friday August 9th Fin will be admitted for his first overnight chemo. She, and the rest of the family, are shocked, saddened, frightened, rearranging life around this news.

Darcy herself continues to face complications from her own leukemia recovery. Darcy will need to leave her job and forgo a salary in order to care for her children and help them fight their individual diseases. And to add insult to injury, she faces unfathomable medical bills as a result and still has many medical bills from her leukemia fight and ongoing journey.

Friends, it seems impossible that so much trauma could happen to one humble, loving, community-minded family. But it is happening right now, to one of our own. A single mom, a nurse and caregiver, a fighter, a generous spirit, a beautiful soul.

We are asking with great humility and gratitude that you find it in your heart to help.  $25 will chip away at monthly utilities and parking at the hospital. $50 will cover a copay.  $100 will put a dent in her rent. $200 will cover a week of groceries. Every dollar counts towards relieving Darcy and her family of financial stress.  Let’s do what we can to help this family in need so they can focus on the most important thing...getting Fin healthy.

THANK YOU in advance for your help. Your compassion and generosity are what make us proud to be part of our community.
