Hello friends! I have been given the opportunity to study abroad in Finland and the Czech Republic with the Furman University Education Department for three weeks in May of 2020. As many of you know, I have dreamed of becoming an elementary school teacher my entire life and this program is designed specifically for education majors. It will provide an in-depth focus on the issues, philosophy, history, and socio-cultural differences of public education from an international perspective through the comparison of the educational system in the United States with Finland and the Czech Republic.
My goal is to receive the most enriching experiences outside of the classroom in order to better serve my future students. Visiting these two specific countries, both of which have very different interpretations of public education than the United States, will provide me new insight on how to become the best teacher I can be.
I will have the opportunity to observe both primary and secondary school classrooms, meet with university faculty responsible for teacher preparation, and learn from guest speakers focusing on special education, early childhood, Project Based Learning, and the inclusion of minorities.
Since this is a MayX trip, which takes place after the semester ends, my financial aid does not cover the cost of this foreign study. In addition to attending school full time this semester, I am also working part time in order to save as much money towards the cost of this trip as I can.
However, I am still searching for alternative ways to fund this experience and am sharing this page with special family and friends. It would mean a great deal to me if you would be willing to make a donation in order to help me fund this once in a lifetime trip.
The Program Fee will cover all of my transportation, roundtrip airfare, tourist visas, lodging for the duration of my trip, group meals, as well as emergency medical insurance.
Any help is greatly appreciated. Even a small contribution can make a huge impact! Thank you very much and I promise to pay it forward!
Love you all, Olivia
