Aloha!

We are husband and wife team, Stephanie Lynn and Bryden Lando, co-writers and creators of feature film Aloha Also Means Goodbye. We recently premiered at the Maui Film Festival and now we are excited to put on the finishing touches and release the film to the rest of the world.

Aloha Also Means Goodbye is Bryden Lando's directorial debut. Lando, grew up in Maui, Hawaii where the film takes place. He grew up disliking most of the films shot in Hawaii, because he felt they never properly captured the true essence and authenticity of life in Hawaii, so he created a story about an outsider who falls in love with the island and falls back in love with herself in the process.

THE STORY:

Alice Monrow settled and is going through the motions as a successful

pharmaceutical rep with two kids and a resentful husband. En route to a

conference in Hawaii, her mind wanders to where it often goes when she’s frustrated with her life - Taylor Hargrove. Alice and Taylor had a fling ten years ago. The most amazing week of her life, but it couldn’t last...or at least that’s what she tells herself to stay sane. When they met, Taylor had just moved to and fallen in love with Hawaii. He begged Alice to move there with him and she wanted nothing more than to take the leap, but fear stopped her. She never went to Hawaii - until now. Bored at her conference and faced with a few days off to explore the island, Alice goes to the place where Taylor used to work. As she sits nearby thinking about how she is equally relieved and disappointed to find out he doesn’t work there anymore, Taylor runs into her by chance. He asks if he can finally show her Hawaii and she agrees. Is this a possibility to see what might have been? A second chance with the one who got away? So begins a whirlwind Hawaii adventure and soul-searching journey for Alice Monrow and Taylor Hargrove. This is a story about the defining choices we make in our lives.

PRODUCTION:

This film has truly been a labor of love. We came up with the film concept on a 15-hour road trip, while listening to an indie filmmaking podcast. During production, the crew often consisted of ONLY us. Bryden created a unique camera and sound rig that he could operate entirely on his own. Stephanie acted as Line Producer, UPM, Locations Manager, Crafty... and also Lead Actress; often figuring out logistics en route to the next location, while learning lines. We worked with incredible actors who were excited for the micro-budget process and thus a truly creative collaboration. While this style of shooting was often mentally and physically taxing, it also allowed the story to breathe and evolve in an organic way.

As filmmakers, we wanted to return to the simplicity of classical filmmaking, in a time of over-complicated production. Worrying less about megapixels and instead focusing on capturing a feeling and telling a relatable story. Our goal was to create a beautiful, character driven movie that examines the human condition.
