Finding Home – The Journey Back
Donation protected
Hello, and thank you for being here.
My name is Deborah White – I’m a recycle artist and storyteller based in the Northern Rivers of Australia. I grew up in Malawi, in the heart of the African Rift Valley, and much of my creative work today draws on those early childhood memories.
This fundraiser is to help me return to Malawi for the first time in decades - not only to honour my promise of taking my late mum home, but also to answer a deep and personal longing. A yearning to reconnect with the land and community that shaped me, to see where I came from through the eyes of an adult.
I’ll be filming the entire process as Part Two of my current documentary project, “Finding Home: The Art of Belonging.”
Why This Journey Matters
The first chapter of my film explored my sense of belonging through the lens of my childhood memories. But I’ve always known the story wasn’t complete.
I feel a strong yearning to return - to walk the land once more, to sit with those who still remember, to gather their stories, and to revisit the landscapes that still live in my bones.
This is not just a trip - it’s a remembering. A homecoming to where my story began.
It’s about more than just me. It’s about amplifying stories of resilience - how people live creatively and resourcefully through hardship. It’s about honouring the women, the makers, the land-carers and the storytellers of Malawi.
