Verbal Dyspraxia is a lifelong neurological speech sound disorder, impacting between 1:2 children in every 1,000 worldwide. Children and young adults will typically understand everything and know what they want to say, but by the time the message leaves the brain and travels to the lips, tongue, palate and mouth, what comes out is often different and in many cases unintelligible. My nephew Charlie is one of those children, who aged 6, sits in a classroom with a lot to say, but unable to say it. He has only recently learnt to say his own name - he cannot say mine. Communication is a basic human right, and every child deserves a voice, or a means to communicate. I am running the Dublin Marathon to raise funds to give voice to those that may not be able to communicate like us. Communication Boards are one such tool that can help children and young adults with speech, language and communication needs to communicate their needs and wants.
