UPDATE: The boys have been home for a few weeks now, trying to go on with life as normal.
Gio still needed 24/7 care for the first week or two, needing assistance with everything. He continued outpatient physical therapy, to which he finally graduated this past week. He is still continuing to do outpatient occupational therapy. Cristian recovered fairly quickly, and is able-bodied, but is having difficulty understanding the severity of his injuries and why he cannot participate in any activity where physical contact may occur. He was released by his physician to go back to school, but he cannot do any test taking, learning exercises, participate in recess or gym. He is finding this very hard to deal with. Both boys continue counseling, and regular visits with their primary care physician.
Mr. & Mrs. Hernandez are still experiencing financial difficulties, as both parents split responsibilities taking care of both children, even post hospital stay. Eduardo is the sole income earner and a small business owner, making his time away from work detrimental to his livelihood. As a small business owner, there is no accrued PTO, Family Emergency Leave, vacation pay, etc. Bills need to be paid, food needs to be bought, vehicles need gas, and their other two children have their own needs to be met, and their lives need to continue on as normally as possible.
Finances are tight and they have yet to receive any medical bill. It will only compound once those start coming in, as it’s not just for one individual, but two. The bills will not just be from the hospital, but all the outpatient care, counseling, and primary care visits as well.
Every donation has been a blessing, and is very much appreciated. Please help bless this family even more by continuing to share this GoFundMe and continuing to show support throughout their struggles.
Thank you, and God Bless!
______________
The Hernandez’s are more than just friends to us. They’re family.
Easter Sunday morning, every parent’s worst nightmare happened. Two of their boys were involved in a motorized scooter accident, leaving them both in critical condition. The eldest was admitted to the ICU with extensive, life threatening injuries. Miraculously, after a couple of days, he improved so much, he was moved to a regular bed, in a room next to his younger brother. Although he continues to improve every day, he will need ongoing treatment beyond the hospital.
The youngest was admitted due to severe injuries to his head and body, to which, he is thankfully, yet slowly, recovering from.
Eduardo, the father, is a small business owner and is the sole financial provider for his family. Both parents have had to split the responsibility of being by their sons’ sides, leaving Eduardo without income while they tend to their boys.
Although they were discharged after 5 days, treatment does not stop. They still have to follow up with neurology, physical therapy, occupational therapy, their PCP, and a lung specialist.
We need to continue the support past the hospital, as they will accrue an extensive medical bill:
2 ambulance rides
2 ER visits
1 ICU stay for 2 days and a regular bed for another 3 stays
1 regular bed stay for 5 days
Multiple CT scans
Multiple X-rays
Multiple medications and tests
Followed by all of the above mentioned outpatient therapy and doctors visits.
The Hernandez boys have touched the lives of so many people in our community. They are always so happy, and full of energy and life. They are truly such a shining light in so many people’s lives.
It is hard enough to endure something like this with one child, let alone two.
If you would like to join in easing their stress and help cover the expenses surrounding their hospital stay and ongoing treatment, it would be such a blessing to this dear family.
Your prayers and support will help carry them through the healing process.
