“The Back Story”
MJ and I met Jamie and Teresa in 2011 after the passing of our daughter Madyson. Teresa lost her son Zachary in 2009, and reached out to help us on our grief journey. Jamie actually worked for my in-laws as a teen. We’ve been friends ever since, and are the proud Godparents to their daughter Amelia.
Jamie was diagnosed with Ocular Melanoma in October of 2018, which was found when his retina detached. He was sent to the Wills Eye Institute in Philadelphia to see Dr Sato, who specializes in Ocular Melanoma. He then went through a procedure where they placed a radioactive plaque behind his eye for five days to shrink and kill cells inside the tumor.
Ocular Melanoma has a high prevalence of metastasizing to the liver and lungs, so he gets scans every three months. Jamie also endured injections into his eye every 6 weeks to help maintain some of his vision. He was then enrolled in a clinical trial from Feb 2019-Feb 2020, which was to decrease the chance of metastasis from 90% to 75%. This drug was not easy, but Jamie powered through the year.
On February 10th scans showed small lesions in both lobes of his liver. Jamie will be having a biopsy on February 19th to aid in tailoring his treatment and for research. Because of the rarity and complexity of Ocular Melanoma, most treatments are still in trial phases.
“Why they need your help”
Teresa drives Jamie to his appointments and will have to miss days or weeks of work, so she can be there for Jamie as he fights this battle. Jamie will need to stop working, so he can focus on his treatment and to spend priceless time with his family. He is the proud father of three, grandfather of three, and has a daughter-in-law and son-in-law. His oldest daughter added, “He is the glue to their family, and keeps them forever laughing and strong”.
Jamie and Teresa have helped countless families in our community and beyond. Jamie is a proud veteran, and has volunteered with Toys for Tots for many years. He has also participated in his church choir throughout his life. Teresa jokingly calls him Jamie-okie, because he just loves to sing. Teresa has helped hundreds of bereaved parents by leading The Compassionate Friends of the Poconos. When they go to Philly for appointments, they even hand out goody bags to the homeless. They never stop helping others, and now it’s time we help them. Even if you can only give $10, every dollar counts. Prayers are welcome too.
