My wife, Kayla Silk-Boyd passed away March 18th after a 5-year battle with Multiple System Atrophy: a fatal, non-curable, rare brain disease similar to a combination of Parkinson's, Lou Gehrig's, and Alzheimer’s. Kayla was at a Skilled Nursing Facility here in Westminster, Colorado for the last six months of her life including Hospice in the final month.
The disease was relentless and Kayla’s condition declined such that she lost 30% of her body weight, was unable to eat, became confined to bed, suffered cognitive and memory impairment, had body tremors, and facial contortions. Even with all of that, she remained determined to walk and ride again and never lost that resolve.
During the first 4 years, we went through all our life's savings to pay medical costs. In this last year, costs exceeded our retirement budget by $1,000 each month, so we found ourselves in serious debt. I was hoping Kayla’s small life insurance policy would cover some of these costs. Unfortunately, her life insurance is/was tied to stock market performance and we lost more than half its value in the current crash.
I need your financial help. I am hoping to raise $6,000 to cover the excess costs. Given the extraordinary circumstances we all face with this pandemic, I realize many of you are unable to even cover your own costs. So regardless of whether you able to help financially or not, I would love to have you share written stories about her, with pictures if possible, for her memorial service to be held after travel and quarantine restrictions are lifted.
Thank you so much for your love, caring, and support. It is the end of my loving wife Kayla's life. A time of reflection, pain, respect, and reverence. It hurts more than I knew. I wanted so much to fix her broken body.
