"Another Cancer Story from 9/11" - Germán Guillen
Most of the world remembers the September 11, 2001, attack on the World Trade Centers, but it is difficult to recall the names of all those affected by the ripples of that horrifying day. However, for many of you reading this you will recognize the name Germán Guillén (Alcides and Celina’s eldest son). The day after the attacks Germán went to work near the World Trade Centers for the next year without masks or equipment.
In August 2021 our 56-year-old brother, Germán was diagnosed with Diffuse Large B Cell Lymphoma, an aggressive form of non-hodgkin lymphoma, otherwise known as cancer. His wife Yohanni and their 14-year-old twin boys Daniel and David, who just started high school this year, feel uncertainty for the future and are frightened by this experience. This diagnosis has been a shock for all of us and more than ever we are leaning on family and friends to support Germán through this very difficult time.
Prior to his diagnosis Germán’s life consisted of working 16 hour days to provide for his family and meet financial responsibilities.
As you may know, the treatment for cancer is a grueling experience and process, which leaves one debilitated for an extended period of time. Fortunately, Germán qualifies for some paid leave and eventually for disability, however we know that these compensations are not sufficient to meet the financial responsibilities of supporting a family in New York City.
As such, we are working on raising money to help Germán and his family minimize the financial stressor of battling cancer.
We thank you for your prayers, love, and support. "
